A group of us swim at Wingra at 4:15 on Thursdays. Otherwise, I know that some folks swim at the quarry in Verona. And, if you go early a.m. you're usually safe at the Terrace, but boat traffic is crazy later on in the day and on weekends.

Not sure where you live, but I joined Harbor's 25 days for $25 trial membership.  I was there this morning and while the pool is nowhere near as nice as Pinncacle's, it was dead and clean.

You can easily swim in the quarry, either before 11am or after 7pm when the lifeguards go off duty.  If you go early, you will see several people there.  Wingra is scary, but safe.   I can take a class there on Tuesday nights.

How do you get to the Quarry in Verona? That might be a closer OWS option for me personally.

Fireman's park is in Verona right off Hwy 69.  If you are coming off the Beltine take the Verona Road exit and then take the Hwy 69 exit. It is about a mile or two after the exit, hang a right.  If you are coming on M keep going down the main drag, take a right onto Hwy 69 and go about a mile or two and hang a left turn.  If you do the loop, you go by this Park everytime.

Thanks for the info,

At Wingra do you just go down the beach and swim beyond the buoy lines? Or is there a better or ideal spot to start swimming from, how far is it across the lake? Is the Quarry about the same size?

have a nice day

At Wingra we swim starting slightly to the left of the swimming beach (as you're looking at the lake) and swim straight across  (towards the tall tree) until it gets too weedy and back. That's about 1600 yards. Sometimes we do it more than once, or sometimes we make a big triangle. There are no motor boats allowed, so it's a relatively safe place to swim.

I'm still planning to swim Thursday - weather and family permitting. Lexi is moving to his new foster home that night - but I have to do the LUNA ride anyway, so I'm hoping for the swim to still happen with the whole family. I might go short and play with the kids in the shallow water for a bit, though.

I haven't been there in a couple of weeks and our class was cancelled tonight due to weather, but I basically go to the left of the buoys and swim straight out.  You can easily swim straight across the lake and back.  oour teacher sets up bouys and we just swim around them 5-6 times.  Wingra is bigger, but it is easy to do loops at the quarry too.  If you are looking for more real world swimming (e.g. chop) you have a better chance of getting that at Wingra than the Quarry.
