So i've pretty much have my heart set on an Element.  Tested it out as well as a Xterra, 4runner and a FJ Cruiser.  Love everything about the Element except for the face that the windows in the back don't roll down.  I have 2 english bulldogs (Hamm Bone and Bacon) that need alot of air and window time.  I can't seem to find another vehicle thats good on gas, can hold 2 bikes upright without having to remove tires, good on gas and hold 2 bulldogs but an element.  Does anyone know of any reason why i shouldn't get an element... speak now or forever hold your peace..  and anyone who owns and element, why do you love it..  thanks in advance.

Own and Element and love it. Definitely made for people who lug around outdoor gear, pets, or messy kids. It's completely waterproof inside. Seats, floor, roof, even the radio is mostly waterproof I hear (although I've never tested it). If it needs clean, just open all the doors and hose it out.

The fold up seats make getting bikes in and out a breeze. The large side door opening (clamshell doors) help with loading other things too, like camping gear, etc.

Get's great gas milage and is extremely reliable, since it's based on a car frame and drivetrain (Honda Civic). It's also just as at home in the city as it is in the outdoors, since it has the wheelbase of the Civic, but overall is actually almost a full foot shorter.

Never had any problems taking it camping or into the outdoors. Wouldn't trust it for full on "off-roading" though, but the standard mountain dirt road won't phase it.

How much room is in the back with the back seats down?

With the kids still in child safety seats, I cannot see flipping them up much.
I have an Odyssey right now.

Thanks Burghguy, that's exactly what i wanted to hear.  Do you really hose it down though?  I am real sceptical about the seats and was thinking of getting some neoprene seat covers.  Also, are there any air vents in the back?  My one big concern is will my bulldogs have enough free flowing air in the back?  so far i'm still sold on it though, just waiting on the dealewrship to pull in an all black EX.

I miss my Element.  It was like the Swiss Army car.  I got rid of it shortly after I got an Odyssey for the wife since I didn't think I needed two vehicles with a cargo focus.  I don't, but I miss the utility A LOT.  That thing carried plywood, firewood, bags of cement, belgium blocks, bikes, and anything else I threw at it.  A vacuum and mop down was all it took to clean it.

If you get the EX, it has a rear sunroof that is removable and the middle windows flip out.  I'm pretty sure a bulldog doesn't have the vertical leap to escape through that hatch. I also drove at times with the hatch popped up (lower gate still up) and that moved a lot of air through it.

Not much I can say bad about it other than it was underpowered, though the new ones with 5 speed autos may be a bit better.  I tend to drive faster than most, so it may not matter to you.

My boyfriend has one and LOVES it. He can take his bike to work and park anywhere in town and not have to worry about weather or tamperers. If you had the back seats folded up or removed and just your doggies and sporting goods in the back, you'd probably get good airflow with the front windows down (but you'd have the wind in your face, too). With the back seats in place and the dogs in the way back cargo space, maybe not. You could also get one with a sunroof and open that for the doggies, too.

Why not have the car salesman drive you around with you sitting in the back with various open-window options and see what you think? I'd do it.

One of the best purchases I've ever made. It's perfect for bikes, dogs, junk. If you have kids, though, it might not be a good fit. It does only seat 4. For those times that we need the seats down or just have too much junk with the dog, we also have a bike rack. I use it as a changing room, too. Because it's not a big SUV, it's also easy to park in those tight spots, which can be real handy at crowded races.

i don't think the 09 models have a sun roof?  i'll double check with the dealer.  My GF sat in the back on one of the test drives... not in the cargo area but in th back seat and was concerned about the air the bullies would get.  I really want the element and will if needed, get a hoopty and turn it into a Bulldog mobile.  I appreciate all your comments about the element, so far... i'm still sold on it... hurry up dealership... bring in my black ex...  oh the other day i saw an all white one... very nice!

Interesting post and I m glad you did. I am (was) considering an Xterra, I thought that was the go-to tri car. Looked big enough to haul my bike and a load from home depot.

Why no Xterra love? Someone talk me out of it.

i have a pro's and cons list of all the cars i've tested last week.

Pro:
Rugged cargo area
Hooks in the back to attach bungee straps
Windows roll dows so my dogs can hand out
Strong engine

Cons:
15-20 MPG
Can't remove seats, they fold down
Not as much space as i thought it would hacve
upholstery didn't look rugged enough for my bulldogs
Bike wouldn't fit stand with or without fron tire..  would have to lay bike on side...

It may fit you better.  My requirement for my new vehicle is:
-fitt 2 english bulldogs
-2 bikes Standing with wheels if possible)
-1 tent
-good on gas
-low enough for the dogs to jump in and out of
-durable interior for sand, mud and english bulldogs

i still the the element is MY best bet..
