I really struggled with the swimmer and this is probably the 5th different swimmer and wave setup, and I am calling it done.  So I zinc plated it and put two coats of clear on it.  I tried taking a picture of it hanging in my garage/shop, and gave up and just put it on some cardboard to take the picture.  I already have two people wanting to purchase it, but this one was for me.  Or so I thought.  :-)

TRI Art

This was posted on here before with a different swimmer and I think one wave.  I like the bicycle part of it the best.  The runner is "ok", and the swimmer is ......... well......... at least a swimmer.......but not really as good as I had it pictured in my mind when I first started this.

Nice! The mechanic in me needs to know how you made it. What are you using for stock material? How'd you join the metal? Your joints all look pretty nice and smooth. What do you use to make bends? Custom jigs or do you just wing it on a vise? I'm guessing you sent it out for plating or do you have that capacity in your shop as well? Show us your shop/studio with pics!!

This material is scrap wire from the manufacturing facility where I work.  The outer ring is .250" and the other wire is either .187 or .144 depending upon what I grab when I start the bending.

Everything is just MIG welded together, then I use a 4.5" grinder to smooth some things out.

Then bending is done by hand or using a vice.  The waves are bent by hand.

The zinc plating was done at the manufacturing facility where I work also.

My shop is just my garage and I am walking around bicycles/tools/home supplies etc.... so there isn't really a shop.

Thanks. I didn't know if you were a full time artist with an all out studio/shop devoted to your work or doing it on the side. I hope you get to some point where you can support yourself full time (provided that is your intent) with your artwork. Have you given any thought to scaling this down to pendant size, working in sterling?

When you get down that small it is usually done as a stamping or a casting.  That is way beyond my garage.  If you looked at some of my other art on the FB page, you would seen full sized penny farthings, tandems, bikes, etc....  Small is not something I am good at.  I did what was supposed to be a 5' palm tree and by the time I was done was over 8' tall.  :-)

First of all.   Thank you!!!

Please understand that each one will be different.  There is not jig, or automation.  I could make something similar, but 100 percent guarantee they will be different.  That and they are not cheap for me to make and plate and clear.  If you are really interested in something, I can give you the actual sizes and the prices in a PM.  I am selling bikes, wine holders and have two people on this board that asked about the deck wine bottle torch holders that I haven't had time to finish yet.

I am guessing one of the TRI athletes from this board posted on my wire art FB page, and I PM'd back but never heard back on FB.  Thanks for looking at my part time art work, and I am trying to get answer you back.  Your FB pictures makes it look like you are a "tri" person, that is why I am also posting here.

1stTimeTri - 2012-09-17 2:17 PM I wonder if that bike is legal??

I guess since it is a "tri" setup I should have made the wheels out of solid disks to be more to the spirit of a "tri" bike.  :-)  This way is lighter?????   :-)
