Subject: Timing Chip company claims they didn't get my chip back

Have any of you ever experienced a timing chip company sending you an email claiming they didn't get your timing chip back?  I got an email asking me to send it back or send them $30.  I do not have the referenced timing chip.  I completed the race, and the volunteers took the strap off and put it in the bucket.  I called the race director to ask him if he knew what options I have, and he said this was the first he had heard of it and said it was between me and them.

What options do I have? Have any of you had this experience, and what was the outcome?  How do I know they really don't have it or that someone on their side didn't lose it?  In theory they could claim this all the time to get people to send them money.  I doubt that is the case, but it crossed my mind.

I am really opposed to paying for a chip I handled properly and returned.  I never wanted my own chip as I didn't want to keep up with it.  Now it looks like I have to pay for one I don't even have.

 Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I doubt that it's part of their business plan to wrongly accuse people of keeping a chip.

I would call the timing chip company and explain the situation in a nice way, see how far that takes you.

I would dig in with the RD. You borrowed the chip for the race and returned it. It's out of your hands. It's no different than if you rented a wet suit or a pair of racing wheels and returned them. Perhaps even direct the chip company to your RD and let them duke it out. How the heck would they have your contact info anyway? Wouldn't they do all their corresponding with the RD in the first place? This sounds very odd...

Dido on all above.  The RD recruits for volunteers, therefore the RD is responsible for the actions of the volunteers and it is the volunteer who handled the chip.  Your part in it should end as of now.

This is probably the one drawback of not having your own chip.  I have considered buying one but I figure they are free at races so why bother, but this is the one reason I have considered it.  How can you prove you gave it back.

Update.  I emailed the timing chip company after they didn't answer the phone and got an immediate response.  The end result was "no worries".  I had always had great experiences with this company in the past, so I was very pleased to see there was no real issue afterall.

Pardon my potential tri newbie ignorance, but how would you buy your own timing chip? With all of the different timing systems out there, I would imagine you couldn't just lug your own chip from race to race & expect it to always work. Also, how would they code it to you?

some marathons will sell them. Even has the race logo on it. I will not use it in a triathlon. if my chip gets lost in the swim I rather be theirs than mine.

There ya go.  There is no way a timing company can say you didn't turn a chip in.....well, they can obviously make the claim, but if I turned it in I'd just laugh and move on with my life.  If I lost it or didn't turn it in I'd pay the $30.00 and similarly carry on with my life.
