The race may not fill up quickly, but there aren't a lot of nearby hotels.

I am excited for this race!  My original goal was to finish sub6.  However, I am setting the loft goal of 5:30.  I REALLY need to get better at the bike this summer.

Not sure about the hotels.  I can't even remember where my reservation is.  It might be the Holiday Inn.

How's everyone's training going?  I had a couple weeks where I fell off the wagon and about all the training I got done were my long rides/runs.... Erg... Hopefully I don't pay for that.

Back on track sort-of this week.

Looking forward to holidays and being able to get all my training in!

When school ended I got in several solid weeks of training.  But spring classes started and my job started up again.  I got a promotion and I fell off the training wagon the past 2 weeks except for running.  Only two more weeks of class left and then I can devote more time to the last few weeks of prep.

I've been out of the pool for a few weeks but I don't seem to have lost much speed.  Running is solid.  I've done 12miles and plan to go up to 14 and 15 the next 2 weeks.

Really looking forward to it this year.  Last year I had a blowout and mechanical problems on the bike which really through off my time.  I've also been on a full IM training plan for the Cedar Point race in Sept, so I'm hoping between that increased training and keeping my fingers crossed on no more flats, I'll be able to significantly improve my time.

hey everyone - i am racing steelhead for my first half iron and looking forward to it.  it's been nice reading race logs from those who have done this one before - any other general feedback on the course would be appreciated!

i'm actually going to scout the course a bit over july 4 weekend as my wife and i are originally from the area and we'll be visiting family over the holiday.  let me know if anyone is interested to meetup for a swim, bike, and/or ride.

oh, and also, if you have any questions about where to stay, eat, or drink - i would be glad to help.

Hey jv, welcome to BT and good luck at Steelhead.  The one thing that killed me on the course last year was the wind.  We had a big steady wind with huge gusts.  As soon as we turned back west is when we got the cross wind off of the open fields, then the entire 18 mile homestretch south was straight into the headwind.  Plus that 18 miles is pretty much a steady gradual uphill grade....or at least that's how my body felt it was at the time!

hi coop,
thanks for welcoming me to the forum.  yea, i imagine the the winds along the lake can be a big factor.  i see today they are gusting nw up to 25 mph!  this weekend, maybe i'll try that stretch along blue star highway.

i'm guessing that when they say the swim will be 'with the current' that last year you swam north or from tiscornia to jean clock - is this what you recall?  i'm planning to get an open water swim this weekend also.

Yep, we swam south to north last year.  Its a game-day decision.  I'm really hoping that the winds are out of the north this year so that we don't have another headwind for that 18 mile stretch on Blue Star Hwy.  If not, I guess I'll be seeing whether all the windy training I've been this year lately has helped

What is everyone's taper plan?  I'm thinking 2 week run taper, 7-10 day bike taper, and... oh , I should probably get back in the pool.

I'm going with a rather unconventional taper.

We'll be in Hawaii the 4th to the 14th so I'll miss some long rides during that time.

I'm not really sure.  I'm currently on a full IM training plan for the Cedar Point race...I certainly won't be doing what the plan calls for that week, but I'll likely scale it way back - was just thinking of a 7 day taper and mostly riding with a few swims thrown in.
