You already own a mighty fine starter bike! If it has wheels and brakes, it'll do for starters.

Now, if you're looking to upgrade from your MTB, then let's hear a little bit about you and any cycling experience you have, your goals, (are you just getting into tris or have you done a few), are you looking at doing group rides or will you be doing mainly solo rides, how serious are you and how competitive, and just as importantly, what is your realistic budget?

I ride my bike to work every other week it's about 1 1/2 miles one way. I plan to do my first tri in 2009 in Orlando the Disney Danskin Tri. I plan to stay solo for now. I am very compettitive. As far as my budget I was thinking os doing my first tri with my moutain bike. If I take to like I think I'm going to then I will look into gettign a new bike.

There will be quite a few mountain bikes at your tri, don't you worry - and you are doing the wisest thing by using what you have until you know if tris are something you might want to stick with it and then perhaps move up to a road bike or tri bike. The sort can be very expensive, if you let it

One suggestion I would make, if your budget permits, would be to buy "slicks" for your bike - smooth tires with no nobbies, which will be much easier to ride on the road and will improve your speed. Take a trip down to your LBS (local bike shop) and talk to them about slicks.

Good luck, and welcome to BT!

x2 on the slicks.  I made that change for my first tri and averaged 18-20 mph on my mountain bike.  The tires, tubes and service was $45.  Well worth the investment.

Welcome to BT!

x3 on the slicks.

And while you are at the bike store (and please go to a real bike store, not a sporting goods store) get a tune up for your bike. I'm always amazed at how many people I see on bikes that would be much more enjoyable to ride if they got them cleaned/adjusted. The next thing after that is to get a bike fit done. You will enjoy your rides much more and have more power if your bike is properly fitted to you.

Have fun in your training. It's addictive!

Agree on the previous advice. My "starter" road bike is a Trek 1000 that I bought as "new old stock" in February and I love it.

x4 on the slicks... I have only done one tri, but my DH put slicks on my MTB years ago as he is really into cycling and they made a huge difference, also agree with getting your bike serviced.  I had my serviced at the LBS 2-3 weeks before my first tri and it rode so much better after the tune-up...Case in point...I finished 120/140 in my AG at my first tri...but on the bike I finished something like 90/140...so you can ride fairly well with a MTB, slicks and a tune up!

Best bike is one that fits well and you can afford.

We really can't tell you what will fit your criteria and your body best.

Buying new bike is so fun. Go to different shops, talk with them, see what they say and recommend and keep asking questions. Take your time and enjoy learning and finding out what is best for you.

This website has lots of information about buying a bike and what type to get.
