Hello all! Wow, I am thrilled to find this website and message board. I just started college in the fall and since then I have been avodiing those "freshman 15," by trying to actually lose weight. In the process, however, I have been quite unsuccessful thusfar because I fell subject to one of the worst things an athlete possibly can: the SOUTH BEACH DIET. Yes, after nearly 7 months, I have finally learned that one cannot excercise for 1-2 hours a day without any carbohydrates. It simply isn't possible! In any case, to the point now, I became interested in training for a triathlon about a month ago because to me it seems to be the ULTIMATE sport ever! (Plus, I don't have to spend a lot of money to train for it ) My problem, until now, had been devising a regiment, both for training and for nutrition. I want to perform well, but also look great in a bikini this summer! In any case, I am two days into my regime, which I hope will produce results by July. I will definately be referring to this way-cool website throughout my training. Best of luck to everyone. GO TRIATHLETES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the team!! this is a great place for infor and support! I know what you mean about the carb thing. I use to do the Atkins thing. It worked good for a while but not when my training started to pick up. Now I am heading in the direction of the Zone diet. Going good so far. Lost 40 lbs and got about 20 more to go to get to my LBM. Again, welcome! Jack.

Ahhh...the good old freshman 15. I remember a long time ago, (4 years) I dreaded putting that on, then I realized that I did. However, I couldn't tell. You know what causes that? Dining commons food, all loaded down with that sodium. MMMMM! I don't miss that at all. Trust me though, once you head home for the summer, you will end up losing at least 7-8 pounds just from not eating that crap.

On to your training. Good luck with that. It will help you lose that weight that you want to lose, and possibly tone yourself if need be. Plus it's a hell of a lot of fun. I get a kick out of it. Anyway, good luck with the rest of your semester and your first triathlon and training.

Freshman 15? Heh, that didn't get me, it was the 'post-graduation-sit-in-front-of-a-computer-for-next-6-years-45-lbs' that got me.

I lost most of it ( and got back into decent shape ) doing a semi-modified atkins. I didn't cut carbs nearly as drastically as
Atkins, but I did reduce them, while upping my protein intake. Not very scientificly mind you, but it worked for me.

As I'm training for my first Tri ( July! ) I've added back in carbs and am not worried at all about weight ( my weight is actually
not changing but I'm continuing to build lean muscle as my bodyfat is dropping and my body is continuing to develop the way I want it to ). If you're training for a Tri you shouldn't have to worry too much about dieting, other than to make sure you getting enough of the right stuff. Most of the diets Atkins/SoBe, etc. seem to be geared towards a more sedentary lifestyle, IMHO than your typical Tri athlete.

YMMV, I'm not a licensed ( or any type ) of sports nutritionist, so best to ask one if you're really concerned.
