Subject: side stitches

I was just wandering if anyone can tell me how to get rid of side stitches. I seem to get them when I run but don’t know what to do in order to get rid of them, any help??

I get them sometimes.  I drop my pace and it usually goes away pretty quickly.

I've always been told to breathe in and out of your nose, which I guess could slow your pace down too. I used to get them quite often, but the nose breathing technique has worked fo me.

I used to get them all the time - the main thing that works for me is not eating or drinking in the hour or so prior to running.  And on long runs where you need to drink during, try to drink smaller amounts more frequently....can be hard to avoid on longer runs/bricks though.

I belly breath -- i.e., instead of expanding your chest to breath, expand your belly.  I can do this while not slowing the pace at all and it usually works for me, at least keeping the stitches under control if not eliminating them.

Try exhaling on your left step when running...  It sounds silly, but that has helped me in the past.  Exhaling on the left step puts less pressure on the liver which inturn causes a reaction with the diaphagm...

I have had a history of suffering from side stitches. Sometimes I'd get them doing a 3 mile run and other times not have any problems while doing an 11 mile run. It seemed so random. The one thing that has worked better for me than any other is paying active attention to and taking control over my breath. I used to just let my breathing control itself. Exerting control over it and paying close attention to when I inhale and exhale has made a lot of difference. I now inhale when my right foot hits the ground and three steps later exhale when my left foot hits. If I'm on a hill it's every other step breathing in and out on the left.

X2 on breathing really deep with your belly on the inhale and exhale.  That gives you more room and allows the stitch to subside.

I have also found the "breathing on the opposite side" thing helps me.

I used to get stitches in my right side, so I would breathe in/out when my left foot hit, and it worked for me!  The belly breathing helps too.
