Subject: Happy Eid al Fitr!!!
For the Muslims, for us MBAs*, or living in Muslim-majority places, for those of us who are just happy about anything involving food, presents, and friends (and maybe even family, though we might not admit it).

Eid al Fitr are the holidays that the holy fasting month of Ramadhan culminate in, and it is a blast. There are two official days, but really, it's the evening before (like Christmas eve), two days of, and everybody and offices still take the day after that off, too.

Firecrackers and fireworks everywhere, people singing, people in the streets at all hours of day and night, massive travel home just like Thanksgiving, sales, presents and everybody has open houses and you just go buffet-hopping. Conversely, if it's the day you choose to host, you get to eat and drink with every new round of guests

You greet each other with "Minal eidin wa faidzin" which means, "congratulations on your victory," and here in Indonesia, also a phrase that means, "Please forgive me any offences I have caused you."

And of course there are special holiday foods only made or available during this time ...

May the chowing commence.

Oh, right, I suppose I should have waxed eloquent about the spiritual aspects of Ramadhan, and so forth, but ... you really should ask a practicing Muslim about that. I'm all about the holiday.

I love holidays. The festiveness, the decorations, the goodwill, dressing up, the presents. Love it. As a kid I always sorta wished that the USA was Hindu, as they have the most holidays and we'd get out of school the most. Yeah - not very religious, I know.

However, in the spirit of Eid al Fitr, to everyone,

Minal eidin wa faidzin and Please forgive me any offences I have caused you.

It's a worthy thought.

You just made me cry a little bit ... and minal eidin wa faidzin to you, too!!! (the Indonesian is Mohon Ma'af Lahir Batin).

If I have not paid you or the corgis as much attention and adoration as you deserve, please forgive me.

Come move to Indonesia. We get ALL the major Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, and national holidays off.

I live on a Hindu island in the middle of Muslim Indonesia. The downside is that, yeah, there are a ridiculous lot of holidays, but you're kinda stuck at the temple doing stuff, and it can sometimes be kinda boring stuff, for most of them.

MBA - I like it.   My husband is ethnic indonesian but his grandfather "migrated" to Dutch Guyana long ago.   My husband does not speak the language and has never been to Indonsia, but his ethno-cultural identity still includes these roots.   I often refer to him as being "Culturally Muslim, but not practicing".

Like many Carribean countries, Suriname also had all the holidays - muslim, hindustani, christian.

I would love to take him to Indonesia on a vacay some day!

I find the Indonesian and Dutch-Indonesian diaspora in that part of the world fascinating. I'd very much say my family is culturally Muslim but not practicing.

If you ever want to come to Indonesia, you know that you and yours are welcome in my home anytime.

I am really touched by that. I wish I were touched by you, but ... uh ... well ... uh ...

Thanks honey and minal eidin wa faidzin, in all the literal and metaphoric meanings!

P.S. What was for dinner? If you can beat grilled shrimp, Southern fried chicken, baked taters with real butter, garlic-sauteed green beans, baby peas + carrots, DR. PEPPER, fresh watermelon, and POP TARTS for dessert ... speak up.
