Main Set:36m /1950 yards

Set #1 36m   Endurance
 Pace: 04m 31s - 04m 10s /100 yards
Freestyle at Endurance pace, try to keep going without breaks and use regular "active recovery" strokes of 25 to keep moving. Try to gradually eliminate the "active recovery" sets. An active recovery stroke is one that you can do easily (back, side).

1950 yards / 100 yards = 19.5 at a pace of 250 seconds (4:10) = That's 4875 seconds or around 81 minutes.

Where does it get that it should take me 36 minutes???

Who provided the pace?  I can see where a BT plan might assume something close to 2:00/100 overall (that's what I figure) in which case 36 minutes for 1950 yards is about right (maybe a little aggressive).

I used the custom plan maker.  Look at the first post, it tells me what pace to use.  And it tells me to go at 4:10 and that for that distance at that pace it should take that time, but it doesn't add up (literally).

I might be mistaken, but maybe this level training program, assumes that you swim X for 100m, ride at x miles per hour, and run at x pace.  For now, just do the time, and don't worry about the distance.

Still as a beginner, it is easier for me to worry about getting in a 30 min run vs. X miles (they will build slowly).  You will find that as you build gradually, your times in each discipline, will become faster, especially if you take those lessons like you stated in a previous post.  Take it slow, I ended up last year (my first year) with overuse injuries that should have been prevented.

So for this workout, I would swim for 36 min or less if fatigue sets in and form breaks down, figure out the distance X that you went, and let the program figure out your pace.  If I was to go out and swim 1.5 hour right away, I would probably hurt myself.

Just my opinion.

I don't know about the custom plan but I know the other BT plans do assume a certain min speed in the swim, one of which I cannot achieve.  So I swim by time.  I do as much of the set as I can.  Sometimes I come close to finishing in that time so I finish it off and go over the time and sometimes I don't come that close.  I love those rare days I get it all in. So my suggestion is to just go by time.  As you get better at your swim the two will start to match up.  As long as your getting in the pool and swimming your doing good

I plan to ignore the swim times and just go for distance and do the workouts, but I'm just curious, you can see in what I pasted that it specifically notes the pace to use.

Here is what the coaches suggest as a base for the program you started.

Who is the plan for?
This program should be used for an athlete who is coming off a season where:

  1. They have already completed a sprint race and/or an Olympic Distance Race

  2. They have a strong swim or run background

  3. They have trained for at last 12 weeks prior to starting this program for at least 8-9 hours per week

  4. A combination of #3 and #1 or #2

Looks like you might be going at it a little too aggressive.

I've worked out 2-5 hours a day most days for the past year or so (less hours per week since July of 09) and I completed a Sprint, does that count?  And it's custom..... it asks you questions and I put in my swim, run, and bike times and also that I was new to swimming.

You should post this in the log help forum... the custom plan creator is new and does still have some bugs - I'm sure they would like to know about this so they could fix it or at least tell you why it came out that way

Cathyd is correct, we looked into this and yes, the calulator did put out some wrong values on your time.  We did most of our testing around the 2:00 swim pace values which is working correctly now.

Will let you know when we get it fixed, should be today...we are making it a priority.

Try it again.  Recreate the plan and import.  We have fixed the issue.  I just recreated your plan (16 week IM at 4min/100) and it's spot-on.

Sorry for the inconvenience.
