It always galls me when I read "mandatory" evacuation. The gubment has no authority to force you to leave your home without any sort of due process. I guess what they are really saying is, if you do stay the gubment is not obligated to help you in any way should the need arise. I agree with that. But it is not your job to decide what levels of risk I choose to accept.

Fundamentally I don't believe it is the gubment's job to protect people from their own stupidity. If you want to run with scissors or ride bicycles on the road with automobiles, or jump out of airplanes or eat the baconater-half-pound-heart-attack-burger for lunch everyday you are free to do so!

They do it to protect people from their own stupidity for the most part.

Even mandatory, they won't force you to leave. My understanding is that it's part of pre-triage preparation. They know what areas are going to be hosed from past experience. If they can minimize rescue scenarios where they know it's going to flood, they can use these services elsewhere. Get's a lot of "challenged" people out of the way too; you know, the guy who goes and buys just enough supplies for his 'btching hurricane bash' and nothing else. Cuz the storm will go through in one day and then the sun comes out, right?

In Arizona we have a "Stupid Motorist Law", you will be fined the cost of the rescue for getting trapped if you go around road barricades during flooding.

We need one of those in SA. Every time it rains enough to flood low water crossings, we have rescue crews working overtime pulling people to safety. There's usually at least one fatality in which a car rolls over in these fast moving waters, drowning them. Most of them now have water activated red lights and the city will install barriers. No help, it still happens like clockwork.

True story. Friend of mine was a camera operator for one of the local news outlets. Interviewing a guy that just got pulled from a crossing that was 5 foot underwater. Interview was going great, guy was grateful…blah blah blah. The newsperson asked him why he attempted to go through when there is a flood gauge in plain view that indicated the water was at 5 feet. His response, " Oh, that means 5 feet, I thought it meant 5 inches."

"Cut, we can't air this, thank you for your time Sir."
