Subject: Knee pains on my bike...advice?

I have just started getting pains just behind my kneecaps when riding yet when I go out for a run immediately after the bike my knees are fine.

I'm worried as I have lots of events coming up and I don't want to be injured but I want to train lots to try and do decent times.

My training logs are up to date if that helps.

Any ideas what it might be?

I was having the same issue a while back and the easiest thing to try is raising your seat height. A little bit goes a long way. I think I raised mine approx 8mm and that fixed the problem for me.

Good luck with it.

I was having IT band issues and was using Speedplay pedals. I switched to Look's and whammo my problems went away. Gordo suggested I look into this after he saw a post of mine. So if you use Speedplays try a different pedal.

Have you been "fit" in some way by a professional on your bike?  Otherwise that would be my guess, your fit isn't quite right and in your case condusive to giving you knee pain.

I haven't but I've been using the bike for about 5 months and had no problems until now, is it possible for the injury to take time to develop maybe?

Do you ride clipless? What kind of pedals/shoes do you have?

Rule of thumb, pain in front of knee, saddle too low or too far back. Pain in hte back of the knee, saddle is too high.

Your knee should be at roughly a 30 degree angle at the bottom of the stroke and the ball of your foot/cleat should be pretty close to dead below the knee. I'd get this dialed in before playing around with different pedals and such. A fit by a pro should be cheaper in the long run than playing around, paying for different parts you may or may not need.

X3 on the seat height issue - have it checked by a bike shop if you can. Another thing you can have them look at is where the cleat on your shoe is positioned on the pedal. Sometimes, if your foot is too far forward or back over the pedal it can cause knee issues as well. I had this very same problem with my left knee doing some MS150 training a couple years back and found out that my left cleat was a little too far back on my shoe. I slid it up a few millimeters and voila! Problem solved.

Good luck!!

I do ride clipless using Shimano M324 Combination Pedals, as when I started on this adventure I didn't have cycling shoes so this was ideal to use with trainers too.

I now use Specialized BG Sport MTB Shoes with the pedals.

I have used the two together since about March this year.

If you've ridden pain free for 5 months and the issue has just started to develop, I wouldn't THINK that's your seat height (unless it has shifted).

My guess is cleat position, esepecially if the pain is worse in one knee versus the other. If it is flip the shoes over and compare the clear position of the "good" one to the "bad one" and perhaps make a small adjustment to make them look the same and see if that helps. As always, making adjustments has its risks but obviously you need to get this right so you can ride!

The other thing is, what did you mean when you said "when I go out for a run immediately....knees are fine"?

The right knee is more painful and the cleat is near the middle of the adjustment whereas the left is at the front of the adjustment.

What I meant sorry was that when I run immediately after a ride my knees don't hurt when running which leads me to think it's not impact related which was my concern at 6ft 3in and 224lbs as I can't really avoid some fairly large impact through my legs.
