Anyone know the distance of the buoys out there? I want to get an OWS in but am terrible at judging open water distances.

Thanks in advance.

It is roughly 500 meters. If you swim from the stone walk way on the left to last pole in the water before the boat ramp on the right, thats roughly 100 meters. You can swim laps outside the roped off area in deeper water.

Be careful in that section of the lake.

what in particular should I be careful about besides the usual, anything specific your're referring to? Now I'm freaked out!

My guess would be to be careful of boats when swimming outside the lines.

Thanks, I was planning on swimming on the inside of the buoys for that reason. I just thought maybe there was nasty sludge or something I wasn't aware of.

That is pretty funny... The nasty sludge was something along the lines of what first came to my mind when I read Bill's comment.  I actually thought a little more along the lines of something out of a Stephen King novel.  He has one short story where this black stuff circles a dock and ... you probably do not want to hear the rest of the story until after you swim.  I am sure he was probably talking about boats anyway... probably.

Swimming inside the idle wake buoys does not gaurantee some drunk redneck isn't going to run you over. With that said, I've often done laps 10-15 yards outside the swim area from the stone walkway to the end pole. It's about 15 feet deep there.

If you are going to swim out to the wake buoys just be careful. That black sludge hasn't been seen in years.

Well I didn't want to mention to watch out for the easter eggs but that's a different story from a different time, plus was at Red Top Mountain anyway.  All I know was swimming the day before easter was really cold.

Maybe I'll go early when all the drunk rednecks are still sleeping off the night before :-)
Actually my mom is going to be camping out at Duckett Mill? at Lanier so I'll probably head up there for a swim.

Haven't given it much thought, Teh Cube... Wifey didn't get in this year, so sherpa-ing is not in the cards for me. She mentioned wanting to go up to Chickamauga for the super sprint that Sunday, but if she doesn't, I may pop in. I'll holler at you if I do.

Hey Cube -

I am going to be at the Women's Tri; i have a friend racing and she needs all the encouragement she can get. Let's coordinate next week as to locations.
