Subject: Can it take 55 minutes to warm up?
Background:  I am near the end of my "couch to IM in 15 months" plan, and so right now every increase in volume (nearing the end...) is a new experience for me.

I did notice, several months ago, that I went from needing little or no warmup to needing 10-20 minutes.  Things have stayed pretty much that way, until today.

Today, I did a long run (but by no means my longest) in which I felt AWFUL for almost an hour, barely able to sustain Z2.  Then in the space of 1-2 minutes I began feeling great and ran the next hour with no serious issues, and at a pretty good pace (for me), hitting my intended zones without any serious problems.

Is this normal?  Does it happen to you?  Does it mean something that I should be aware of?

I have found that my warm up time varies depending on my mental state, wait, let me explain. I have to be "ready to run" mentally. When I'm start my run and I"m thinking about the bills, grocery shopping, etc, it takes me much longer to get in the groove.

Take 5 minutes before your run to clear your head, get your mind ready and see what happens.

I would also say that if it continues, you also need to look at your training volume to make sure you're ready for the load your asking of your body.

I would say that 10 minutes is about normal for me.   55 minutes is a little long..... but some times you just have to find that groove!

Agree with the other poster that if your "warm ups" continue to take that long, you might look at easier or more frequent rest days.

That one hour run before your  Tri is going to be a killer, dood.  :^)

How old are you?

I think it may be age related. For me being 47 I think takes longer to warm up.

I do longer warm ups than I have with my new coach and it suits me better. When I run I often feel better after 2-4 or maybe even 5 miles than when I start. It is weird as the aches and pains from training don't bother me when I train but after I train.

I do think it is part mental as it takes awhile to clear away mind from the day and get into run mindset for me.

I'm 41.  Yes, maybe accumulated stress and training has something to do with it.  I guess that's part of what I'm asking -- do you take longer to warm up when you are pushing your limits (volume-wise)?  I don't think I'm overtrained (I've been there before), but I am definitely pushing my limits.

I know when I hike it takes me a solid hour to hit that groove. I'm DRAGGING from the parking lot for the first hour, and then boom, just like you said, I hit my stride and am good to go. I've learned that I just have to get through that first bit. So the answer is yes, it can take 55 minutes to warm up, depending on what you are doing.

I would take a look at your nutrition that day and the day before, including hydration, your sleep, and your training patterns. I'm assuming you've already noted if your route was harder than usual. Also, check your stress at work and home/family. And, this is gonna sound weird, but what other activities did you do that day or the day before? Sometimes we forget that pushing the munchkins around the zoo in the double stroller for three hours is actual WORK!

x2,  I also find this to be the case.  It usually takes me 3 to 4 miles to get to feeling groovy.

I would say you've hit the nail on the head here. When my volume goes up, toward the end of a build period, I am often tired and it can take forever to feel "good." I believe as you become more fit, this will diminish, but still...you're just tired. At the same time, make sure you are hydrating adequately and eating clean, healthy foods to fuel your tired body.

it's never taken me personally that long, but many days it's a good 20 mins or so.. when I was doing longer runs many times it would be over 30 min.. They were usually early am runs 5am, at the end of a tiring week or poor eating

My IM run training was non-traditional; but for those last few long runs, it took me nearly an hour before I started feeling OK.

On the run, I'm ready to go immediately, but on the bike, I'm miserable the first hour.  The course I use for most of my 50+ rides has a very slight grade uphill for the first few miles.  It's just enough that I feel sluggish going up it, thinking I should be going faster.  Once I get beyond that part, my mind usually clears and I'm OK the rest of the ride.
