Subject: open water swims in Vancouver

Hi

I am going to Vancouver this week to check out the course for the Subaru HIM.  Does anyone know if I can safely swim at Lacarno beach?  are there any organized swims? I know the local open water swimming clubs have not started up yet and kits pool is also not open til a week later . I really want to try open water swimming in the ocean so that I can feel a little more prepared.

Thanks for any info!!

Amanda

Hi Amanda - no lifeguard there until the Victoria Day long weekend. Other than that its just going to be cold!

too cold to be hopping in the ocean yet for me.   I do subaru every year as well, but dont usually hop in the open water until a few weeks prior.

I think lifeguards might start appearing after may long weekend if i remember correctly.

Anyone thinking of trying Sasamat this weekend? Or checked it out yet? I'm getting ready for Oliver and while I have no problem swimming in lakes or the ocean, I've never tried it in a wetsuit, so I'm getting pretty antsy. I'd REALLY rather not try it for the first time at Oliver, but its been so cold!

sasamat VERY popular last weekend.  triathletes everywhere.

it wasnt incredibly cold, definitely manageable -- not warm by any means, but i've been in much colder water.

Awesome! Thanks for the update on the lake. Guess I'll head out there on Sunday.

Hey Twink, I just got back and while I agree that a wetsuit is the way to go (and everyone else there was in one too), I totally think it was nice enough to go without if you really wanted to.

I don't even like cold pools, but my feet and face and hands felt great. I didn't feel chilly even a little bit.

Are there any local groups that are worth checking out besides Vancouver Open Water Swim Assoc?  How about swimming solo at the Vancouver beaches or lakes in Port Moody?  Too sketchy or is that common?
