I would recommend not going from couch to 1/2IM in 7mos. What is your current activity level for the last 6mos? How much cycling and running have you done?

Hi
I havent done any running or cycling in the last 6months except playing a bit of rugby. I have however done cycle races of more than 100km and dont think that will be a major trouble.Swimming will also be fine. The one thing is the runing.I but I would just like to complete it.I dont have to run the whole 21km.
What do you think?
Thanks
Arno

Played rugby and doesn’t like running – sounds like a front row to me!!!

I’ve just started getting into this and I’ve taken one of the programs here and developed it for myself by upping the schedule to a comfort level for me and working from there.

Ie on the bike program I’m doing week 7 , the run week 2 and the swim week 3. Then I’m increasing it as per the recommendations.

Try something like that – the programs here give you a good idea of where you need to be at the the ½ so take these and adapt it to where you are now.

yeah...pretty much like the rest have said...until i get the 1/2im program up within the month, do what mike mentioned...a general idea is that u may double the olympic program for the half...BUT the swim for the half will pretty much equal the swim for the oly.

be carful building up for the run especially if your just beginning with it...dont increase more than 10% week and have a 60% decrease in volume every month...u may be better than some with your cycling legs.  but like u said, if u dont get to reach the miles u need to by the event...just walk the rest...dont hurt yourself.

Is there a reason you don't want to start with a sprint or olympic distance event? I have seen articles recommending to not do 1/2IM or longer first year doing tris. If you insist on doing it, start training LSD now and see how the training goes. Start your running with a run/walk program like Jeff Galloway's to get your endurance and distance up quicker. The biggest concern will be for overtraining and injuries with the acclerated schedule.

Start with the run. I know that I am not going to have any problems getting my swimming up to 2 miles, so I have not started that. I am only running and biking, because that is where milage might be a problem. For you just run for a few weeks then ad some biking and swimming. Good luck.

I am ready to do a .0237 Ironman! I was the same way. I wanted to just do a Half IM but now, i bumped that down to an Oly and now my first will probably be a sprint. I feel good, but just want to be injury free and have many years of triing. I am in no hurry now to get to the half IM, atleast for my first year. year 2 will be another story tho!  Jack

I'd say get into some running races and soon around March and April. They will kick your ass but will help make you a runner quickly. If you go and suffer through a half marathon, you would probably need about 10 easy training days to recover properly but maybe a month later your running will skyrocket, I've seen it happen.

I just started myself & my ultimate goal is to do a 1/2 IM in June 2005! The training programs on this site are great & I am on the 2nd month of the Oly program. Great start, but it certainly puts the 1/2 IM into perspective!

I am being a bit more ambitious. I started training late Dec. 2003 for a May 2004 1/2 IM, my first ever Tri. I am in the same boat, should be good on bike and swim. Need big work on the run. I will do some local sprints as part of my training. My goal in May is to finish and build from there.

Here are two other sites that may help you in your training. http://www.trinewbies.com/1TP.htmand www.halhigdon.com . Both great programs to help with your run and your training in general.

Good Luck,
Jimbo Raley
