Subject: Uh-oh. Minor problem?
Today it was so, so, cold(hi 26F) here in Lubbock, TX. There was ice on the ground which made it that much worse. While I was walking into the coffee shop(actually Taco Villa, but that isn't important) to read my morning papers, I slipped on the ice but caught myself before I fell. I didn't think anything of it until I later in the afternoon when I felt a twinge on my left inside knee.

About 10 minutes into my spin ride(Spinervals 1), I felt that twinge again. It got progressively worse as I began to push the tempo. After 5 more minutes, the pain didn't subside and I figured it was time to give it a rest, heat/ice, ointment and medicate with ibuprofrin.

Up until this AM, my knees were actually feeling *better* than they have inthe past few years. Has anyone had this or know what this could possibly be? I am worried that something stupid happened which might require medical attention. Stupid is as stupid does.

If it doesn't get better with rest and Ibuprofen, see your DR.  My 2 cents!

What sucks is that I was just getting into a workout rhythm. Perhaps in the meantime I can do some upper body work and pare down the spare tire.

you might have strained some knee ligaments. if there's any clicking, you might want to take yourself into a doc ASAP- it could be serious ligament or meniscal [cartilege] damage.

is there swelling?
does it hurt to bend?

i'd give it about 3-4 days and if the pain is still there- knock down your docs door. but do rest it... good luck.

i would have to agree with the others, if there is no clicking, but just some pain after some spinning...something may have either got bruised or strained.  lay low.  swim, do upperbody weights....strengthen those abs...give it a week ofrest at least (for the knee).  take ibuprofen...and get back into it in a week to see how it is.  joints get into some pretty crazy positons when trying to 'catch ones fall' - especially on ice...wouldnt be surprises if its a stressed ligament or the like.

after a week, go see a doc if problem persists.  u wont lose much momentum in a week...just focus on your upperbody.

I have done swimming through minor knee sprains. As long as it doesn't hurt the knee. Take a few days off from biking and running. It is better then the whole season.

sounds like ACL stuff. I would get thee to a dr. I don't even play one on TV. I've decided that knee things are to be taken seriously tho.

On the subject of clicking knees...about 10 years ago I had the right cartilege removed from my right knee. No problems after that untill I started tri training and the knee had started to "click" when i go up or down stairs. Also sometimes immediatly after a run I get a pain in my right knee for a few seconds then it goes.

This sounds worrying to anyone? Off to the Doc I guess :-(

The knee is feeling better today. There is little to no sign of pain this AM.

But I am curious about the "clicking" noise everyone is referring to. I have had "noisy" knees as long as I can remember. I went to an orthopedist a few years ago and he said they were solid, just "noisy" from a rough patella. Is this the same noise everyone is referring to? I often have pain in my knee joints which I have grown accustom to, but the feeling was distinctly different. I think it was just a minor strain...I hope. :-(

I think I *will* lay off the biking and running for a few days as everyone suggested to give it a rest though. A little extra swimming will do me some good.

About 10 minutes into my spin ride(Spinervals 1)

I'm glad to hear you are doing better--on a side note, what do you think of these?? I saw an add for them in the latest Triathlete magazine (oh how we obsess) and was curious about them.

Thanks!

Dana

I am working on Spinervals 1.0 "No Slackers Allowed". The name says it all. The tape is good...but be prepared. There are times I think my thighs are going to EXPLODE. While I am working very hard, I often find that my legs give out before my HRM signals the alarm. I find that it is difficult to walk afterwards because my legs are shaking so much. It makes for a good night sleep though.

My wife says that it is not unlike a "spinning" class at the gym. Having never attended such a class, I have no frame of reference than what she says. However, she commented that the intensity level on the Spinervals tape appears much higher than her classes, and she has been "spinning" for a couple of years now.

Take it for what it's worth. Since I am still in the novice stage, I may not be the best person to ask.

Hmm, maybe I'll belay that investment. I just got my bike trainer, so I'll just take it straight for a little while!

Thanks for the info/endorsement.
