I'm a guy, I tried out the shaving the legs thing for last seaon for the main reason being that if I fell off the bike it would be easier to heal etc. (well thats what my roadie friends told me)

But does it really make a difference, I mean after 2 years of cycling, I've only fallen off twice, most of the damage was on my elbow and hip, not really much at all on my legs.

It's such a pain in the to do as it grows back so fast. Does it really make a difference to the healing? I don't care about speed improvements because personally, I'm not going to win anything by splits of a second.

Sure, it makes your legs look better, feels better when swimming, easier to get out of wetsuit, but I don't think it's worth it, seeing the season is coming up in a few months in the southern hemisphere.

SO IS IT WORTH SHAVING FOR IMPROVED HEALING IF YOU FALL OFF ??

Absolutely not. There's zero validity to the claim that road rash heals faster if you shave your legs. I don't think it's any less painful to scrub hairless road rash either.

I've said it before...

Is it worth spending the time it takes to shave week-after-week, month-after-month, year-after-year, just so that when you do finally have that big crash the road rash pain is only a 9.6 instead of a 9.7 on a scale of 0-10?

Basically, I'm saying that either way, it's going to hurt like hell!

Have razor, won't travel.

Still love the BT video on shaving when the dude talks about waxing and a bikini trim.  The look on his face when you shakes his head is priceless!

I think it will always come down to personal choice, like the Ginger or Mary Ann, Ford or Chevy, mustard or ketchup, Decaff or regular arguments. The less pain while cleaning the wound part is debatable, I will agree it might take less time to clean the area of the wound, but no matter what shaved or unshaved cleaning the wound will most likely hurt.  I clean my wounds with a commercially available antiseptic that contains lidocane then scrub and bandage. Shaving to me seems to make little difference in the pain area, but it goes pretty quick the other advantage and one that I am experiencing right now with my knee all bandaged up is taking the tape off to change the dressing doesn’t yank the hair off your leg so that hurts less. To each there own, if having shaved legs is a bonus in a relationship that’s a plus I can live with.

We always used to say Ginger to date, Mary Ann to marry.  And since she still looks pretty good, I guess that was the right choice!

RE the road rash thing.  I'd say the risks of razor burn, ingrown hair folicals and being hit-on in the locker room far outweigh the road rash risk.
