Subject: imbalanced/clumsy in the morning: ideas?
Hey all!
So I don't believe that this is related to my tri training because I was experiencing this before I started, maybe going on about 5 months or so, not quite sure,
but does anyone else have this experience:
when I first get up in the morning, regardless of getting up quickly or slowly, I'm off balance/lose my balance - not falling, but like I need to catch myself from losing my balance. It happens to me when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the restroom as well.
*note: I had this before tri training, but not for a very long time
*not talking about after a night of partying, just regular workday and the right amount of sleep
*I'm in my mid-20's

Is this normal or something to cause concern/pay attention to? Usually after a 1/2 hour or so I'm back to normal. Anyone with personal experience w/ this and/or advice?
thanks!

I would talk to a doctor.  my first through was lay off the booze, but that is obviously not the problem.

i agree with what that crazy psycho looking cat with a gun said... i'd see a doctor.

does it happen if you take a short nap also, or just happen to be laying down on the couch?  or do you only see it happening after a long period of sleep?

Very difficult to say based on limited information.  There are quite a few things that could cause it including problems with fluid volume, inner ear, central nervous system, neurovascular apparatus, medicines.  You'd probably need to sit down with somebody and go through all your symptoms and let them ask questions to get a better idea of what's going on.

Thanks for the replies.
It basically happens after a period of long sleep, but also to a lesser degree just when I've been laying down for a bit. I put a call in to the doc, that's probably the best bet. I had been ignoring it, but this morning I had it a bit more than usual and was thinking I should actually look into it. Thanks again for the responses.

note to self: I'm not hearing that this is normal for anyone else, which is a sure sign to me that I should get it checked out.

You definitely need get to it checked out by your doc.  It sounds like it might be related to low blood pressure, but you need to find out for sure.

I had similar symptoms at one time related to a congenital heart condition - probably not as serious in your case, but please get it checked out.

So I have my doctor appointment set for this Monday. Any specific questions I should ask/tests to do? I don't want to make a mountain out of a mole hill, but I also don't want the doc to dismiss it as nothing abnormal and then have to come back later on with worse systoms to do some tests I can do now.
thanks!

Just explain what's going on.  It's a pretty common complaint, so he/she will know what to do.

Vertigo maybe??? It's good that you are seeing a doc. In rare cases dizziness can be the sign of something more serious. Keep us updated.

I sometimes stumble in the morning/middle of the night, but it's because my lower back is on strike after laying down all night. Any fast moves cause a lot of pain because the muscles are pretty tight.

It takes me a good 10-15 minutes of moving around and stretching before I have confidence that if I tripped over a cat toy I wouldn't go crashing to the floor because my back wouldn't be coordinated enough to help keep me from falling.

Usually by the time I'm out of the shower & getting dressed I'm feeling OK. But it sounds like what you experience is different.

Actually what I was talking about here is different, but I also experience the back thing you're talking about as well - great, huh? I'm good at streching it now and then during the day, and then before/after workouts, but getting out of bed too, and also during the day, as I have a desk job, if I get up too soon or move too suddenly, I'll get that sharp pull in the back telling me "hey, not so fast, where do you think you're going?" Different though from the clumsiness/lack of balance, but always nice to share these things.

So I went to the doc today to get it checked out. Not the ears, not the eyes, not the blood pressure, reflexes are fine. He drew some blood to see if maybe I'm anemic - I'll find out Wednesday. If that's not it he recommends I see a neurologist to do some more tests..I'll keep you all posted.
