Subject: Trek 5000 ???

My local bike shop has a 2007 trek 500 in great shape.  This will be my first road bike and plan on using to train and ride multiple triathlons as well as an ironman in over a year from now.  What I want to know is if this would be a good bike for what Im looking for and if the asking price of 1000 dollars is a good deal or would I be better served getting something cheaper, thanks for any help and advice

Yeah, I was liking the deal too, Not sure about road bike geometry for an Ironman, but it's been done before 100's of times.

I'd say it's a good deal as well on one condition.  Does the bike fit you?

Yeah, Im taking it for a test ride tomorrow to make sure it fits comfortably.  I was told that I would be better suited with a good road bike than a tri bike even for an ironman because of my inexpereince and that my goal is more about finishing than competing in these races.  I really appreciate yalls help, i have been nervous through this whole situation but looks like im getting ready to bite the bullet and start the adventure.  thanks again

I have the Trek 5000 and love it. I paid a bit more for mine but it was the latest model at the time. I rode it in a HIM August 2nd and it was a great ride.

I took mine out for the first time this evening.  I had not rode a bicycle of any kind in over 10 years.  I only cruised for about 12 miles and it really felt good.  I just need to learn how to ride a little better.  I think I was putting too much pressure on my hands or something because my fingers kept falling asleep on me.  LOL  But I love the bike

"Components" refers to the drive systems (the cassette - the big thing on the rear wheel with all the gears, the chain ring - the two or three gears on the pedal; the levers, shifters, etc.). There are a couple of manufacturers, and they all have different levels from entry to pro; and specific for mountain or road bikes (although you can retrofit them for the "wrong" type of bike).

The 105 series on the Trek 5000 is a nice entry level system.  And you may not need anything better for a long time - my old racing bike had 105 components, and I just upgraded the bike after 15 years. The next level in Shimano is Ultegra, then Dura Ace.

For $1000, you'll be getting a very nice bike.  My old Bianchi cost me more than that in 1992, and obviously the technology has improved a lot since then.  If it fits you, go for it.

Anybody reccomend a good seat to replace the one that is on there.  This think has me incredibly sore on just a short trip.

Taking into account that you said this is your fist time on a bike in about 10 years you are going to be sore regardless of what seat you have on there. Give it some time before you drop any more money on a new seat. You will be surprised how soon your sit bones will aclimate to the new workout.

If it persists then look into it but seats are expensive and you will want to wait and upgrade when you are a little more experienced.

Congrats on the new ride may you enjoy many miles together.

Actually, I would suggest getting a gel seat. I switched out the original seat on my old road bike when I was doing a weeklong tour, and it made a world of difference.

On my new bike I got this seat from Performance (which is on sale right now). Not gel, but very comfortable.

ETA - don't forget to where bike shorts.  The more padding, the better.  I prefer Nashbar gel shorts.

Yeah im looking to pick up a pair of shorts for sure, and I also ordered an adamo road saddle off ebay for like 40 bucks, so i might try to have that put on to see if it makes a difference.  I bet alot of it is from not having been on a bike in awhile but also many reviews of the 5000 said the saddle was the only weakness of the bike, so we will see.
