Who's going?

My wife and I are planning on doing it (still need to register though!) and a couple of our buddies from our swim team/running group are doing it.

Any words of wisdom from the experienced?  This will  be our second tri ever, and longest.

I'm doing it and can't wait. If you haven't registered you should soon and you should also get a hotel or somewhere to stay. We registered last month an got what we were told some to the last rooms up there.

We actually just got a room yesterday-they apparently had a couple open up.

I am not going this year, but I have done HoD the past 2 years, and it is a lot of fun.

It's also kind of a pain in the butt.

HoD is a point-to-point race, so T1 and T2 are 27 miles apart, and the finish is 34 miles from the start. Race volunteers transport your run stuff to T2 on the back of a pickup truck. Sometimes, the bags fall off. I saw 2 folks last year who did not have running shoes. (Race officials went back to retrieve them, but these folks still ran at least 2 miles in their socks.)

If you do not have alternate transportation, the race provides a shuttle that will take you from the finish back to the starting area. In the past, it would stop at T2 so you could get your bike. Apparently, this year, though, the shuttle is full so they will not be able to stop at T2. You will have to retrieve your bike yourself (i.e., drive from Lake TOK in Louisville back to T2 in Philadelphia). You will have until 2 p.m. to do so.

They do not hand out swim caps. So, bring your own. And probably should be one you don't mind losing. They do gather up the stuff from T1, but it's just easier if you don't leave anything there you actually want to get back.

It really is a fun race, and the lap around the race track at the end of the run is a hoot. Food is great at the finish and the awards are decent. The people putting on the race couldn't be nicer.

Just be prepared for a bit of a "down home" feel. (Also, a lot of traffic since it is during the Neshoba County Fair.)

They re-opened registration last weekend and I jumped off the fence. I'm doing it again this year!

Excellent!  My wife and I are both doing it, and we're bringing some buddies down who are competing in the relay.

So what should I do with my goggles and things I'd like to have after t1. It is my understanding that they just pile everything up and it is a free for all to get what you left. Should I just leave an old towel and put my goggles in my pocket so I don't have anything to be stolen or searched for?

That is probably a good plan.

Unless you are a goggle like me and could stand to lose a pair.

How did it go for everyone?

I was pretty happy with how everything worked out for me-far better than my first (Dragonfly).  I ended up having faster avg's in all of the legs than Dragonfly.  I became quite tired on the run, but I was pretty happy with the ride given that I'm still riding sans aero bars.   There were 31 in my AG.

That swim time of yours was pretty incredible. I had a great time. Only two complaints -- tiny transition area causes alot of slow transitions and too much traffic on the run. But what can you do about the traffic and Im sure they will fix the transition problems. Really good race. Loved the bike. Had one of my fastest bike times. 22.6mph

Thanks!

I registered quite late (I was #342 I think), so T1 for me wasn't so bad for me as pretty much everyone who would have been in my way was already gone.  I'm not competitive enough at this point to get too excited about my transition speeds.

T2 was another story though-I had to run around to the back of my rack, which was on the far side and facing perpendicular to most of the racks so I had to run back around to get out.  Oh well-like I said-I'm too slow at this point to care too much!

I agree-tons of traffic on the run!!

I thought it was a great race..although in reality I have nothing to base that on. This was my first pure triathlon of any distance (have competed in a few off road, kayak instead of swim type triathlons).

I finished 14th of 60 in my AG (35-39)

No way - I finished 13 / 60 in my age group - 35 - 39. If that is your first tri then you rocked it - We were neck and neck! Good bike split.

I thought it was a good tri.  The thing that needs to be improved is more space in T1.  Also it wasn't cool for the race director to yell at folks on his little megaphone about getting out of the water for a warmup swim when there was 15 min. left till the start of the dang race.  I mean come on, this aint Jr. High.

I didn't hydrate well before the race and cramped during the bike as well as after the race.   Besides that everything was good.  I wanted to finish within 2:37 and finished in 2:34 in the 30/34 age group (16/40).  I will take that.  Now I just need to learn how to swim.
