Subject: Speedplay Pedals ?
I currently have Speedplay "Frogs" on my Tri bike along with a carbon Tri shoe.  I don't have any issues with them while riding and until recently have not had anybody able to convince me to switch to another pedal for any advantages.  I have gotten to the point where I want to learn and practice how to keep my shoes on the bike after my ride, and during T1.  With this combo my shoes have so much float that they just fall off the cleats.

My assumption was that I should switch to a different cleat system and was going to get some Look pedals.  However,  I have recently seen several Tri bikes with speedplay "Zero" cleats and heard others recommend them.  Is there anyone who keeps their shoes on the bike during T1 that uses "Zero's" and finds they work well.  No issues with the shoes falling off of the cleats into T2?

Thanks,
Michael

I have seen people use tape on their shoes to keep them in place during T1. You can run along side the bike, get to the mounting place, jump on and strap in. The tape breaks away easily, but holds the shoes steady so a little bouncing doesn move the shoes enough to get them out of position.

Yes,  I could use tape, rubber bands, etc and that would "set" the shoe up in the appropriate place, but it doesn't solve the issue of the shoes falling off the bike when I get off at T2.    It also significantly reduces the ability to practice this on routine road rides.

Really I am looking for the best Tri pedal system that retains my shoes best for both T1 and T2.

Ive seen people use rubber  bands too, They just snap off once you start to pedal.
Ive  seen Andy Potts use this method, although he does not use speedplay.

I have Speedplay Zeros.  They are great.  No struggling to clip in, ever - just stand on the pedal and go.

That said, I don't do the flying dismount thing.  Too much of a clutz - I'd wreck and take everyone at the mount/dismount line out.  Coming into T2, I just clip out, stop and get off and run with my bike into transition in my bike shoes.  No need to worry about keeping the pedals on the bike and I can still do T2 in under a minute.

I have the same problem of my shoes falling off after I jump off the bike coming into T2. I haven't solved the problem yet but will before my next race. I've thought about using my Dura Ace pedals for racing but I'm worried about deviating from my training setup with something as important as pedals.

So what I think I'm going to try is to buy a new set of cleats that I only use on race day. Then, I'll bend the little wire that attaches to the pedal so that they are very hard to come on/off the pedals. I'll test them and try to make them fall off in that "entering T2" scenario. If they'll stay on during the tests, I race with them.

Zeros will work well for what you are trying to do.  My shoes only come off my pedals at stop lights.  (meaning that I keep them on while not in use)  I have no issues ever.

I use Speedplay Zero pedals also and I have never had an issue with my shoes coming off of the pedal after dismount.  I have been using these for a year now and at first they were almost too tight but after a few rides they loosened up and are easy to clip out of now but definitely still require a little bit of force to clip out.  I have never had a shoe fall off in T1 or T2.

x3. My Zeros have yet to disengage from the pedal as I'm jumping off the bike into T2.

Part of the problem I've had is that I have clown feet and so I think the ground hits my shoes hard and knocks them off. I also put a lot of climbing miles on the cleats before replacing them and so they do release easier than when they were new.

Just pick up the back end of your bike as you are running to keep the pedals from hitting the ground.

It sounds like I should put the Speedplay Zero's back on my list.

In my mind the advantage of the Zero's is their low weight and lots of float (that I don't really need).  The down side is their cost.

The advantage of the Look's is the larger platform and lower cost.  They have plenty of float for my knee's.

Anyone have any other thoughts or preferances or experience?

Thanks,
Michael
