Subject: Old Helmets
The thread reminding us to wear our helmets got me thinking about old helmets.  How do you convince friends and loved ones to replace their aging helmets?

Mrs. gearboy and I went to a friend's house recently after doing a charity ride. They heard us talking about how much fun we have riding, and I offered to overhaul the bikes they had sitting the garage gathering dust and cobwebs (a 1970's  Ross and 1980's schwinn). When we got together a couple of weeks later, they initially showed up without their helmets, so the husband ran home to get them.  The helmets were at least 12-13 years old! What really shocked me was the wife is a doctor, who is also extremely cautious about pretty much EVERYTHING (as in she was appalled that we would eat wild berries without fear of cryptosporidia, and also made her husband undergo a series of blood and radiology tests because she thought he looked a little jaundiced - which turned out to have been from his recent eye exam where they gave him the yellow dye), thought nothing of riding around the local park without a helmet AT ALL, let alone an antique.

I gave them my usual lectures about riding with a helmet, and keeping things in good working order, which I guess worked since they did buy new ones later that week. But I have seen my sister-in-law's family doing the same thing. I suppose I should be happy they know enough to actually OWN and WEAR helmets, but I worry that they are having a false sense of security, and that if they get injured, they will actually stop wearing helmets because "they don't work".

Should have run over to Walmart and bought new certified helmets for about 10-15 dollars.

I'm not sure how they work when they get old.  I had a "Skid lid" about 25 years ago.  They did a study with them and found that they might have actually increased the severity of the injury.

I know a lot more about horseback riding helmets than cycling helmets, but with riding brain buckets, they only "last" 5 years. Meaning, they break down in five years to the point that, even if they have been sitting in a box, they should not be used, as they will not adequately protect you to ASTM/SEI specs.

Methinks you needed to have a helmet smashing party with them...good thing they at least got new ones pretty quickly!

I replace our bike helmets every 4-5 years, but I never thought about my daughter's riding helmets.  I'll have to check them.  I know she has several, but I think she usually replaced them for the "looks" that she wanted to have in shows.

Here's two recommendations from Giro and Bell. Helmets are way too inexpensive to take a chance with. A $100 replaced every 3 years is only $33 per year... most of us can easily swing that... and staying safe.

How often should a helmet be replaced?
Giro has a general recommendation of replacing your helmet every three (3) years. If you are unsure of the condition of your helmet, or whether it should be replaced, call us at (800) 456-2355 or e-mail us at [email protected] for information on a free inspection.

Even at Walmart, adult helmets are $20-50 (still very, VERY cheap compared to head injuries).

Friends:  Explain it to them; show them pics of what happens when you're poorly protected; mock them.  Whatever it takes, within that range of possibilities.

Loved Ones:  Take a baseball bat to the old helmet; run over it with a car; toss it in the ocean.  Whatever it takes, within that range of possibilities.

Normally I would recommend being nicer than this, but in this case, I actually fully agree. Do what ever it takes to get them a new helmet.

With my friends, I was surprised she wasn't already all over it.  Like I said, this is a woman who won't eat wild berries due to the very rare risk of infection.  And she is a doc, so she knows (or should know) all the inherent risks of riding without a lid.

Check for swimmers first.

I dispatch my old helmets honorably- set them on a flat surface and impart a swift overhead blow using a long, blunt object (stick, baseball bat, etc.) Seppuku style.

Hey all--

I did purchase a helmet at the start of my tri training and do wear it religiously. I am glad that I did. Last Monday, I was clipped by another rider, who may have been high, on a bike path and was thrown off at 20 MPH. I came down on my head, shoulders, and back on some large rocks. My helmet was cracked and I walked away with pulled muscles and a slight concussion. Had I not been wearing a helmet that had foam that wasn't old and could be compressed, I believe that I would not be replying to this thread today.

Please replace old helmets. Destroy them how you may. That 50 dollar replacement could save your life.

A helmet saved my life.

It is important for the helmet to fit well. I have seen people wear helmets that have the chin strap with an inch or two gap - If the chin strap is not snug the helmet is not going to be in the right place when you do crash!

Oh crud!  So you are saying a 30 year old helmet is bad? SurprisedGuess I better go get a new helmet tomorrow.  I am wearing my dad's helmet from when he raced in the late 80s. Doh!
