I have FIT tv and flipping through channels saw a show on swimming.  They're doing a biography on Diana Nyad the marathon swimmer.

I am NEVER complaining about my swim workouts again EVER.  On her 102.5 mile swim she lost something like 29 pounds even though she was consuming 2100 calories per hour.  This was all open water from Bimini, in the Bahamas, to Florida with no wetsuit or fins.  Something like 2 solid days of swimming.

So next time you're having a bad day in the pool, just think about that

I saw that show as well.  The weight she lost and the calories she was consuming were incredible.

The accomplishment is just insane, but the calorie count just can't be correct. If it was, she'd have gained a ton of weight because it's pretty much impossible to use up that many calories an hour. I'm 170 pounds and I'd have to run almost 20 miles in one hour to use that many calories! Besides that, your body simply can't process that many calories in an hour. Most Ironman athletes take in between 300 and 400 calories each hour. They'd take more, but the body can't digest it.

I should try and find the name of the guy but someone swam around vancouver island last year and it's one big island.  It took him over 30 days I think.

Another one of these freaks of nature can be read about here...

www.swimjimswim.com

Concentrates on ridiculous distances in and around the Great Lakes.  I can tell you even in Mid-summer, Lake Michigan is a cold, angry b#tch on most days (at least to a novice swimmer like me).

Here is the link to the guys webpage.  He swan 1,400km in 94 days around the island.  Pretty amazing.  I heard an interview on the radio about him a while back and he said that he did very little swimming to train because he didn't want to get totally bored and burtout from swimming before he went.
