Melon Presser ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Welcome to Yanti and Lynn's Manatees! You would be a wonderful addition to our lively, supportive, and most useful crew. We're all mentors and mentees, but Manatees just sounds more fun! Just to establish our street (and pool?) cred, we’ve done a bunch of triathlons and distance running events, and have lost a ton of weight during our journeys. Read on for more details if you like! Yanti I grew up in Indonesia, where I swam with the national team and my high school team. In the States, I coached and competed in martial arts, but became sedentary after an injury. Fast forward … a student suckered me into doing a charity marathon—before long I learned how to ride a bike and picked swimming back up! After 15 years in the States, mostly Southern California, I’ve moved to Bali, Indonesia, where it’s great to have the ocean, a boardwalk for running, and easy bike routes at my doorstep. I’ve been lucky enough to do marathons and triathlons around the world. I’ve lost over 120 lbs since becoming active again. This year I feel like a newbie again as I am taking on a new distance—Ironman Western Australia in Dec. 2010. While I’ll do a couple Olympic/international tris and some other races during this season, my entire training is focused on the IM goal. Lynn I've done 2 half-irons, the last one Ironman Oceanside a week ago, plus 1 marathon, 5 half-marathons and a few gazillion other tris. I'm probably NOT smarter than Yanti and I don't know about faster -- we've never raced each other!! I've always been active, except marriage and family resulted in me neglecting my exercise at times. About 9 yeas ago I realized I couldn't wear any clothes in my closet anymore, so I joined a weight loss program and dropped 30 pounds. I've been able to keep it off and now work for that organization. It's really been a lifestyle change. Adding the activity component is just one piece of the puzzle to me staying healthy. This is my second full season. I did my first 5K 2 1/2 years ago and only did that because I knew I could walk if I couldn't run it all. That's the way I approached my first 1/2 marathon as well -- knowing I could always walk if need be. I didn't walk in either, btw. I started doing tris in 2008 after a friend died of breast cancer. Realizing life is too short and we need to tackle the things we want to while we can, I embarked on a BT beginner sprint tri training program. I did the sprint and survived and was hooked. Along the way I've researched and read as much as I can about tris and the swim, bike, run. I have had the help of a swim coach and another friend/coach who's designed my HIM training programs. I certainly do not know all the answers, but will seek the answers for any questions. Plus, thankfully, Yanti knows a LOT!! I am a good cheerleader and believe we can support each other. I do believe I met some friends through BT and gained some insights and knowledge as well. I'd like to pass on anything that might be helpful to someone wanting to embrace the s/b/r lifestyle or any part of it. Personal: I'm married, am 49, (yikes) and have a teenage son who's a freshman in high school. I have a dog, Augie, whos' kind of nutty and 3 kitties (now 1 and two years old). It's never too late to tri --- It's never too late to be who you might have been either. I look forward to sharing your journey with you. Edited by TriAya 2010-04-08 3:20 PM |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi! I'd like to become a Manatee as well. :D I'm Emily and I'm 25. I've never really been super athletic, that was always my BFF's area. I stumbled across Team in Training and decided I wanted to attempt a triathlon. The fall season doesn't officially kick off until May, but I've started to get myself in shape anyway. I'm aiming for a sprint tri in August and my Oly with TNT in September. I'm having a little trouble with motivation right now. I've been struggling with ankle problems, so I'm trying to be good and stay off it. I'm scheduled to run in a 5k in 2.5 weeks and then another a few weeks after that. Hopefully I can ease myself back into training. :P |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Can I be a Manatee? :-) Age: Older than 3, younger than 99, old enough to vote, too young to be part of AARP. This is my first tri season, my very first 5k race is May 1st, and first triathlon is May 15th. I do not have an athletic bone in my body, but I've lost about 30 pounds from biking then added running and swimming later on. That should say something! I'm kind of unique gal, as I'm deaf. I have two cochlear implants (and I have NO problem discussing CI's, deafness, deaf rights, blah blah...don't be afraid to ask questions), hence why I'm a Cyborg! Goals: To finish a Triathlon and have fun. Secret goal: to finish under 2:30! Attainable? Perhaps, but I'm not taking it to heart. For first race I want to see how well I do, and focus the next few months (may to September) on my weaknesses, and do better for the next Sprint and for the first Olympic. I hail from New Jersey, transplanted to Las Vegas. Las Vegas is hot hot hot. Therefore, pretty soon all my runs/biking will be during the wee hours of the morning, and hence why the triathlons are much later in the season to prevent overheating. Anything else you want to know? Ask away. Just don't ask my bra size. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello fellow Manatees. I'm Carla. Married for 7 years with a 5 year old son, 2 weimeriners and a cat. I would tri in the 30-34 AG, but I usually go for the Athena category if available. I started doing tris the year I turned 30. Hadn't lost the baby weight, and was tired of being way overweight and way out of shape. I've only lost about 10 pounds, but my fitness is pretty good for the weight that I still carry. I would still like to lose another 34-35 pounds. My food choices aren't that good, so I likely won't lose the weight until I have the self control to make better food choices. I've completed a handfull of sprints and loved every single one of them. I wogged my first full mary in March and have a century ride planned for June. I have a sprint tri in October, and not sure what other rides/runs/tris I'll throw in this summer. I'm excited to be a Manatee |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can't say I've tried water running. I probably wouldn't be able to resist humming the "Chariots of Fire" theme while doing it, though. :P I'm hoping to be back at it over the weekend, even though with the day I've had, a 3 mile run would certainly work out my frustrations. Or a 10 mi bike. Or a 1000 yd swim. |

I might even post a rant in BT's Cup of Joe forum about it (that's the place for non-triathlon-related threads). I hear you. Any way you can get a workout in this evening? Maybe just a long walk or something? Yoga (there are some good videos on BT)? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() May I join the manatees? I have seen an actual manatee once...but not any of the ones in this thread I am 29 and currently live in Chicago. I just started last year and I did two sprints and now I am hooked. Unfortunately my training really slacked off over this lovely Chicago winter that we just had. But since the weather has gotten better...I have had more fun training outdoors (really hate the gym). I know that I want to do a few races this year but currently I am unsure of which ones and what distances. My first one was in Ohio last year and I really enjoyed it plus my family was able to watch so I will probably do that one again but beyond that who knows! Feel free to ask me any other questions! ~Ryan |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am in the S. Loop so not too far away! I was just so excited for the warm week that I biked all week and ignored running and swimming although I did go running last night before it got cold again. I would like to do some OWS but I think I will have to stick to the pool for a little longer. Unless I take a trip the ocean...ok I will keep dreaming ![]() |

Welcome, Q! You are all good to be a Manatee. ![]() ![]() Thanks Yanti, OK, we're starting off with the Bay to Breakers in SFO, not really as a race, more of a bucket list item and a massive people watching experience. We are seeded, but the Babydaddy put his foot down and said we're starting in the very back so we can see everyone. Oh, and we'll be dressed as the Amandas (our Halloween running costumes...the Hooters Girls...it makes sense if you see it)... Then it goes kinda like this: Soldier Field 10 Miler Bike the Drive (not really a race but...) Batavia Sprint Triathlon Bigfoot Olympic Tri Harbor Lights Sprint Triathlon L.A.T.E. Ride (another not really a race) Chicago RnR 1/2 Marathon Chicago Triathlon (can't decide if sprint or oly) Lake Geneva Triathlon (probably Oly) Chicago Marathon There also will be some bike events, and possibly other running events that I can sign up for on a whim. I'm actually probably best at 5k's but they bore me...I'll do at least one or two this summer. I am also looking for some straight OWS stuff but there's not much of that going on here.... If I can pull it off, I will add more races as time and money permit. My biggest hurdle is my two darling children who require supervision, feeding, attention, etc, etc. I can train with them but haven't figured out how to race with them in tow yet... ![]() |
