Well I thought I was past the "new clip in pedals fall" stage but apparently not. I was coming to a stop light yesterday, and as always, unclipped my my left foot before the stop. That was fine except I was thinking too far ahead and began reaching for my back water bottle and leaned to the right, my right foot was still clipped in. I fell over in slow motion. I did as any proud athlete would do and quickly got to my feet to examine the pedals on my bike to see what "they" had done wrong. I've heard others call this turtling and couldn't quite get the visual of why. Now I get it. I am not a small guy, 6' and 195 lbs., and as I lay there in the middle of the road on my back with my feet and bike up in the air with one foot still clipped in, I got the visual. Ahh, good times. These are the moments when training is fun and we can look at ourselves and laugh. It would be nice to read stories from others as I told myself it has happened to everyone at one time or another.

Heh, Turtling...I had not heard that but can relate.  I just did this last weekend, thank goodness I went for a quick ride the night before my tri or it could have happened in transition.  I adjusted my cleats as well and forgot to fully tighten them once I got them right.  My brother wanted to go on a short bike ride that night.  So I figured what the heck.  As we are approaching a steep hill and I begin my ascent I dropped to the small ring and dropped the chain instead.  I go to pull my foot out and the cleat twist so now I am stuck.  In my head I know what's coming but my first instinct was to pedal through it and figure it out when I reached the top.  So now I am pedaling at about 150RPM and falling in slow motion.  I had to take my shoes off to seperate myself from the bike.  Ugghh, such a humbling experience.

Yeah, when first got my bike I did the 'oops I forgot to clip out; I think I'll just fall over now'.  But a near fall that felt even sillier to me happened while I was already stopped.  I lost a water bottle, turned around, clipped one foot out to stop, and when I came to a stop, the bike was leaning slightly the wrong way. I began slowly to fall over towards the clipped foot.  It all happened in slow motion.  Only at the last second was I able to yank the bike up and swing it the other way to avoid falling.  I thought: "Wow, I'm capable of falling over with one foot already on the ground."

Well done sir.  This is indeed the correct thing to do.

Your other option, if you manage to get the other foot unclipped quickly enough, is to smoothly transition to doing pushups, as part of your cross-training workout (that you planned right from the start of course).

Haha!!  Welcome to the club!

I was adjusting my pedal tension at the end of my driveway before I went on a ride.  I clipped one foot in, and shifted my weight too much when I turned to look behind me.  I went down on my clipped side, even though I was completely stopped!!

Was riding on a very very hot day with some friends.  They wanted to do another lap around the park.  I passed because I was so hot I wasn't feeling well.  I split off from them.  Came up the last hill out of the park.  Really was feeling kind of dizzy and was worried seriously that I was going to pass out, and crash. I thought I would just stop at the little gas station across the street grab a gatorade and rest for a few before heading the rest of the way back to the house.  Got so focused on not passing out that when I got to the stop light at  the intersection, I forgot to unclip, and in front of a very long line of traffic at the stop light, I tipped over....and had trouble getting out of clips.  Forgot all about being hot after that :-)

I somehow managed to do it two days in a row.  The first day I was doing a hill workout riding up a canyon that dead ends at a little bed and breakfast.  At the top there is a nice little roundabout that I usually use to make an easy turn around, but for some stupid macho reason I decided to try to go up the extra 15' to the absolute end of the road where a single lane ends at a steel gate.  I realized far too late that I didn't have enough room to turn around and ended up laying on the ground with both feet still clipped in.  I made a quick scan around to make sure none of the bed and breakfast guests saw me fall over and took off as quickly as I could verify my bike was still in one piece.

The next day I was leaving my neighborhood waiting in traffic about 3rd in line to make a left turn.  I left from a stop when the first car went and clipped in not expecting the second car to stop due to more cross traffic.  I briefly panicked trying in futility to unclip first my left pedal, then the right one, and again on the left finally succeeding in freeing my left foot in just enough time to stick my left foot straight up in the air as I fell to the right.

But of course, your cheeks were bright red from the HEAT, right?

When I bought my pedals the owner of the bike shop told me "I promise you 2 things, you will LOVE clipless pedals and you will fall".  He was right on both counts.

Rode up to some friends and onto the sidewalk and unclipped before I stopped.  Put out my right unclipped foot only to realize that I was on the edge of the curb and it was about 8 more inches to the ground.  Down I went laughing Yell and still clipped in to the left side with my bike on top of me.

How long is the new clipless pedals fall stage?  I am so far one of the few lucky ones that hasn't fallen thanks to clipless pedals yet.

Does it still seem to happen to those of you with years of riding experience or do you usually learn the hard way very quickly?
