Subject: Going Sockless

For anyone thinking about this, definitely give it a try! Once you get used to no socks, it actually feels way better, and it can take less time than you'd think to adjust. I first thought there was no way I could ever go sockless and my suspicions were almost confirmed when the first time I tried it I did develop a couple of good blisters even with bodyglide. But after only a few more times trying, I ended up doing it during an olympic distance tri. Can't say I didn't have any problems, but I only had two hotspots that were quite bearable during the race and only hurt for the last couple of miles. And now that I've done it a couple of more times, I'm already down to one slight hotspot, no bodyglide, and actually wearing them for interval training as well. So if you've tried it and come down with a few blisters, keep trying it out, you might be pleasantly surprised by how fast your feet adapt (I certainly was). Your shoes need to fit quite well though and it helps if they don't have seems. Also, make sure to give your feet plenty of time to heal in between sockless runs in the beginning.

(This was originally in response to the other thread about going sockless, but I hit the wrong button...)

Don't do what I did... always wore socks on the run, for training and racing.  Then in the last triathlon I did in my first year, for whatever reason, decided not to put them on in T2 (it was a sprint).

It worked out for me... I PRed the 5K (nothing to do with the socks of course) and didn't get blisters, but I don't recommend it.  Not smart.

FWIW, I only wear them on the bike when it's chilly out.

Noob question...
I know tri specific cycling shoes are designed to be worn sockless, but what about running shoes?  Any old running shoes and my feet will adapt, or are there "special" sockless running shoes?

I'm a sockless runner in training. I always ride without socks, but was concerned about running this way. Recently I picked up a pair of racing flats and thought this would be a great opportunity to start. First time out I got 2 nice blisters (that was a short 3 or 4 miler), just yesterday I did 10 miles sockless and was clear of blisters besides a very small one on the tip of my toe, but I think that was there prior to the run. I definitely am a fan of it and never thought I would have been. Give it a go, but do it in stages to toughen up your feet.

I never wear socks with my bike shoes (Shimano m075 w/spd), and I was thinking about going sockless on the run to make t2 faster, but I can't decide. Its only a 5k and I am good at ignoring pain if something goes wrong..

we'll see

OK, going scokless.

On the bike, this is easy and I dont think that you need to worry about the type of shoe that you wear.  I have not worn socks on the bike in 6 years or more (unless it is cold out).  This is for training and racing.

On the run....

This is different, probably for everyone.

There are a few shoes that do not have seams (Zoot, Pearl Izumi) that are idea for running without socks.  Also Newtons are very nice for running without socks.

As for other brands, I usually have some blister / rubbing raw issues.  I race in Zoot / Newtons so this is not an issue for me and now that I have found Newtons not an issue for training.

So depending on your shoes (race and training) you may want to experiement.  What works best for you.

At T1 / T2 socks suck.  Trying to get socks on wet feet takes way to long.  Sometime you just have to HTFU and deal with a little pain.

Also if you are doing an IM, I will wear socks.  Just too long of a day to go without......

Train and race up to 10k without socks. I prefer it, really. I never wear socks on the bike regardless of the distance unless it is cold.

I went sockless in my tri-vent cycling shoes and my Zoot Running shoes and loved it!  No hotspots or anything in either shoe!

Oh and the Zoots are on sale at www.runningwarehouse.com  Too bad they weren't that cheap when I bought them!!

After the initial info I got about going sockless, I am transitioning to that. No socks at work and no socks to run or bike (and no socks to swim.....hahaha). I actually hate it right now but think that soon I will not care. We will see. Hopefully it will pay off in T2.

No socks on the bike, ever.  HIM and shorter, no socks because I race in my Zoots HOWEVER, I will wear socks for the run in an upcoming IM.  I have the sense any comfort I can find at that distance will be appreciated.

bike is not an issue....actually most bike shoes are extremely comfortable, and you are not putting the kind of pressure to get massive blissters.

running is a COMPLETELY different thing.

i personally never run sockless training, all my races are done without socks though.  then again i have different racing shoes and training shoes.

HOWEVER for my HIM comming up, i will wear socks.  13 miles isn't a huge distance but my legs will beg me for socks at mile 8-9.

I never imagined the day I would not wear socks, but when I got my cycling shoes I started riding without them and found it much better than expected, they have good ventilation and my feet stay nice and cool and pretty dry. I bought a pair of Zoot shoes thinking I would try them without, but more than likely I would have to use them with socks, and I have had no issues at all, only 1 very tiny blister that was not even noticed for a day or two. The Zoots are SOOO comfortable.

Sockless on the bike for any distance (Sidi's are great!), but socks for any run >5k.  Haven't found running shoes yet that don't rub somewhere.
