Subject: Sports as a Bargaining Chip?

Okay, I need some help understanding something.

On the news today was yet another story of the proposed sanctions against the Iranian soccer team at the Worlds by the USA in roder to "force the governing parties into addressing the build of weapons."  Recognizing that this has been a historical tact used by countries to make the banned country realise the errors of their ways but come on.  With the 1980's boycot of the USSR Olympics actually contribute to the Wall coming down?  Did the IOC ban on South Africa bring an end to the racist regiems?

The only thing that will come about as a result of a ban on the World Cup qualified Iranian team will be anothe black eye for those that push for it.  If people think that they have seen fanatical ideology in the past, try to prevent a Qualified Team from competing.....  And, this is not to make any slight but Soccer in other parts of the world is much like a religion.....  Why even go there?

The next story was about the Woldchampionship of Baseball which is taking place in the USA this year.  Apparently, CUBA has been banned from the event because of the old 1959 embargo and the laws that prevent the financial gains by the Cuban people by the USA (Believe me, there is a law!!!!)  So the Visa weren't approved and the players have lost out.  Fidel (aside from being a major baseball freak is apparently a PR master) then turned around and said, "Well then, all the money that we would have gotten from gate receipt shares will be DONATED to victims of Hurricane Katrina."  Now the American administration has to try and figure out how to ban them for "other reasons" and save face while doing it....  I'm sure this ban wll lead to the fall of Fidel Castro's Communist regiem!

Who sufferes in the end?  Do you guys really believe that these bans and embargos work?  If so, why?

Sports are great ways to bring countries together. Even when we don't get along in politics, we should be able to share the same playing field. The soccer team is not who we have a problem with. let them play.

Amen brother. Perhaps international sport should be the way we decide on stalemated diplomatic issues. One issue only per game, UN decides what gets played for.I.e. Softwood lumber; one hockey game - Candad Vs. US - winner gets what he wants loser has to suck it up.

The main point being, AT LEAST THE GAME WOULD GO ON.....  Would it be an effect approach to pull Peter Reid from the Ironman World championship because of the soft wood lumber?  Same issue as Iran and Cuba.  Looks like something is being done but in actuality, the sport suffers and you have a few more disgruntaled people in the world.

You could always ask the people who trained for their whole lives for the olympics only to have it turned into a political statement by Jimmy Carter. I wouldn't be very angry if I had trained for my whole life only to be not allowed to participate in one of the greatest and most honored sporting traditions in the world. Shame on Jimmy Carter and the rest of the countries who followed suit and boycotted the 1980 Olympics and ruined the dreams of these athletes.

Although the banning of Iran from World Cup play will NOT bring an end to their nuclear weapons program, it is a necessary and strategic piece of statesmanship. Right now Iran is split between a young and progressive population and a conservitive religious theocracy (of sorts). The more pressure that can be put on the Iranian government from the inside via the young progressives the better for everyone. No one is going to be as upset by the barring of Iran from WC play than the young progressives. So I say let them live with the ramifications of the theocracies actions. Maybe it will inspire a few hundred more people to side with the progressives. You have to remember that in Iran the movement has alerady begun. They, unlike many middle eastern countries, know that when their government acts in a certain way consequinces will follow.

all of this remminds me of how cruel humans can be to each other, and that sports mean so little to some. like when the bosnians used the olmpic centers to store bodies.

If you would like, I can send you some pictures of old Havana.  I was there last year, stayed in Varedero, got married and went into Havana for a day trip.  The place is awesome.  The avatar picture I have is of a 200 year old bronzed monk from old Havana.

Nothing in the world like having a Cuba hand rolled cigar and a big glass of cuban rum
