So I don’t do too many races anymore, like 2 a year. First one is this Sunday. Tripped on my walk into work today and twisted the shite out of my ankle. About $170 lost on this one, not so good in the market today either...

I know how you feel, I've done that twice. Tape that sucker up and go volunteer at the race.

Cowboy up!

In 2002 I turned my ankle the first 1/4 mile of my first marathon. I got up and could not walk....so I ran. Had been training for a year and was not going to tap out after 1/4 mile. 26 miles later I finished the race setting a PR that I’ve never beaten. The next day my ankle swelled up like a Christmas turkey and my entire foot was purple.

OTOH, RICE.

Much better this AM but not going to try and run on it. I'd go to the race but it is like a 3 hr drive from here.

You could do the swim and bike and take a DNF. Then again, biking probably not good for it either.

The “R” in RICE is rest, I think that is what I will do. I have a 10K in a couple of weeks.

Sorry to hear it OB.....my knee blew 10 days before the only Iron man race I ever trained for....and that was that. Unfortunately.....or I suppose fortunately...I'm getting the itch to do triathlon again. I've been on a 2 years on, 3 years off program for over 30 years. This one would take me to 60 years old.... which sounds like a good time to stop again.

Yeah, I got a love/hate relationship with tri. I love how the training makes me feel. I’m on zero meds and I turned 59 in March. BP 120/80. If I lose 20 lbs then I wouldn’t be far off the shape I was in college. However, the training, most specifically the running, really takes its toll. If I keep my runs at 5K then I’m good but much over that the PF flares up, cramps are common, my hamstrings are a mess.

Yeah.....I'm 58 and would be med free as well if not f or the AFIB that I and docs pretty much blame on all the running over the years....already had a stroke that I recovered 100% from, and no desire to have another, so a blood thinner is on the daily diet now.I don't really love or hate triathlon....it's just something to do when I feel like it. Overall I'd just as soon hunt or fish.

This is turning into an old guys injury thread. I was one year out of my back surgery when I fell out of an airplane at work onto my neck. It really messed me up, but I'm ready to get back at it. I doubt I'll ever ride aero again; I'll try a few times before I sell my tri bikes and go with a standard roadie set up. Sigh. I'll probably never do another triathlon anyway. My swimming stroke is so spastic that I know my neck wouldn't take it. Maybe I'll do the run- bike- run thing or look into some of the adventure races. Hell, my Farmer John routine takes most of my time these days anyhoo.

I’ve got a long list of real good reasons for going from 2 time Ironman to couch potato and putting on 100 lbs but they are all bs so I won’t go into them. Last October I decided I was killing myself and felt uncomfortable all the time. Dropped 73 so far. Still too heavy to bike or run. Felt B12 is covered in dust but I will get back on it eventually. I was 255 and 6’3” at weigh-in for my last IM and was in the best shape of my life. Finished in 14:30. I will probably never do another IM but I like the Oly distance so may shoot for that after I retire. I’m 55 now....younger than you old farts....but no dmiller either.

I just can't muster the amount of run volume necessary for me to feel confident about an Oly race so I've pretty much settled on doing sprints. As I am a MOP racer and no amount of training will really change that much, not much training really needed and not much of a challenge either. Been thinking about shifting some of my S/B/R time to incorporate more strength training and focusing a bit more on longer bike rides as I see that as my long term interest.

Dawg, I went over may handlebars 3 times in a span of 7 years while riding my bike with an aero cockpit. 2.5 years ago I said flock it and went to a roadie setup. I lost about 1 mph in races but haven't crashed in the interim either. Separated shoulders hurt way more than that 1 mph.

Jeez Rog, your lucky that you are not a hood ornament on the Caddy. After my last crash (not hit by car) I took a look at my training while waiting for the XRays on my shoulder. I had a bit over 1K miles in the last year and when I realized that I thought myself lucky to be alive. Were pretty lucky in FL, we have a lot of rails-to-trails to ride on so I don't ride on the road much any more.
