I'm just wanting to learn a little about this Tri.  I will be competing this year and this is my first Tri.  Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences that they would like to share.

I did the mini up there last September which is the same venue with different routes.
The course is nice. There are a few hills on the bike course and a hellish short hill coming out of the transition area. I'm not sure about the run and the lake is clean in comparisons to most other. The only drawback to the swim was the rocks at the bottom at the start and finish but nothing that should deter you.
Now that I'm thinking about it, I may sign up for it.

I did the sprint last year as my first tri. Previously done a few du's. First class event. Organizer goes above and beyond. Nice technical shirt, water bottle, cold finishers towel, great food. Course is nice, rolling hills on the bike (after the first climb out of the marina area), then a nice run along the lake. I would recommend it. I'm graduating to the OLY this year for my first OLY! See you there.

What's the clarity of the lake like?  This will be my first tri and am mentally preparing for the worst - the insane cloudiness of the lake at my state park...  All my other OWS's were in the ocean off of S Florida, so I think I might've been spoiled just a little

A little spoiled?!? Hey the water here may be dark and cold, with nothing to look at, but at least there's no gators.  So there.

I'll have you know that while I was checking out the sand 10 feet below me on those swims, I swam over a few stingrays.  Pre-Steve Irwin.  Yeah, just call me Nails, as in Hard As.

&I guess that means I'll be training here on out in the cloudy lake with the twigs, dead gnats, and lord knows what else floating in the lap lane instead of the nicer lake in my state park.  Mmmm!

Thanks for the feedback.  I'm looking forward to it.  How cold is the water?  Does it require a wetsuit?

I don't know but I'd imagine it'd be similar to last year around this time which will be atleast low 70s. It certainly wouldn't require a wetsuit but as long as its not too hot, you could wear one for the additional speed/buoyancy, but thats your preference.

Last year the water temp was 78 or greater (wetsuit swimmers were not eligible for prizes)

I would echo what others have said - very well run event, bike course hilly and the run is shade covered and flat.

Good luck,

Ed

The water is likely to be quite warm. I did OLY this weekend in Poconos and it was wetsuit illegal. Steelman was wetsuit illegal last year as well. So do not expect the water to be that cold.

So what's the deal with the athlete note that was supposed to be updated and sent out last week?  Is the course going to be the same as last year?

Anyone know the deal with packet pickup? Currently neither I nor my friend who's doing this race can make it up there on Saturday, I was hoping for packet pickup on the morning of, but unfortunately looks like the only option is Saturday. I guess I can try and write the RD....

I thought they do have a morning of pick-up option. But I don't know if there will be vendors on Sunday.

I missed the info in the athlete note on the website. They ahve packet pickup on the morning of the race, from 5 to 6:30 am.
