Subject: Bikes Lowermainland

 Hey all,

Im in the market for my first roadbike, Budget is around $1000. I live in Abbotsford and have been to Wentings in Mission and Lifecycles in Abby. Both places were great and had decent selection.

Any advice on good bike shops (I dont mind driving to Van to bike shop) or suggestions for a beginner bike?

Thanks

Andrew.

What size bike are you looking for? I have a Norco CRR3 for sale for $1000 (was $2300 new) .... it's only a year old, great bike. I simply found a sale on the CRR1 that I couldn't pass up ... I'm in Victoria but my husband travels to Vancouver regularly ...

If you only have 1k to spend go used.  You wont be able to find anything good new for 1k.  If you go used and get a good frame you can always upgrade the components a little later when you have more cash.  Tribc, used vancouver, and ebay would be good places to start looking.

I'll agree with that. Check out cycling bc's classifieds section, or craigslist as well.

Sounds great, but my fear is that I'll end up with the wrong size, isn't each brand sized a little diffrently?

I would say if your buying new that Wentings is the best. I live in abby also and went there to get a tube. I told the kid I had never put one on before.. don't laugh and he showed me how. I have a older bike so as we were talking he also put new tires on, trued the rims and did a tune up for free. I had to buy the tires but he did all the work for free. The service is great there. They also do bike fittings. It's forty bucks but likey free if you buy from them. Just my two cents worth.

I am also in the same market as you in the market up to 1k.  I am looking at craigslist and ebay saw a couple of nice ones on craigslist don't go new on our budget.

I started bike shopping in July.. and finally bought a road bike in August... Ended up spending more than I'd planned... but overall, I think I made the right choice/decision... TRI BC, Used Vic or Vancouver, Ebay and LBS's are all great places to seek out your next bike... I visited most of those before opting for a new Cannondale CAAD 9...

If you're looking used.. i think the most important thing is to know what it is you're looking at in terms of composition, components, frame sizes, cranks, gears, etc.. the last thing you want to do is spent $1000 on a used bike.. and then have to spend $1000 to upgrade it to what you need (or want) to be competitive..

All the best..

Hiya ... what size bike are you looking for?? I have a really nice, nearly new Norco CRR3 for sale ... haven't listed it yet ... it's a Norco "medium" frame in the 2008 line....

I've also been looking for a lower priced road bike for my tris next year. I also think Wentings is first rate, very knowledgeable in both tri and cycling. (I live in Abby also).

I started looking for used but I didn't find much. I'm leaning towards the cheapest TREK I can find that is using Shimano 105 which will get me closer to $2000 instead of $1000. I think it's important to really love your bike so you want to ride all the time (I used to race years ago).

http://www.trekbikes.com/ca/en/bikes/road/2_series/21/ (CDN dollars)

I'm going to try and twist Bruces' (owner) arm at Wentings to give me a smoking deal on the TREK 2.1, I think they fit you for free also when you buy from them and they seem to really know what they are doing.
