I've been DJing for many years, though since I got on the triathlon kick I haven't been buying records much lately. Nonetheless, I thought I'd put a mix I've done recently up here for those who might be looking for some electronic music to load into their ipods. The mix I'm putting on here is a mix of techno & trance, but there are other mixes on the site that are more techno or even D'n'B.

Link

For those who want more trancey stuff, download 'Live from His Cave'. If you're more into straight-on techno, download the 'Live @ 106.7FM' set(you'll even be seranaded by the sweet sounds of my voice in an interview ). If D'n'B is your thing, 'Derailed' is your best choice. And finally, if you want something from the old-school, try the 'Live @ Bubblin' '04' mix.

btw if anyone on here is interested in more electronic music, I can post links to sets by various DJs/producers from time to time. I don't want to offend the Moderator Gods, so let me know if that's out of bounds for CoJ.

I don't listen to music when I train outisde but I am a big fan of Hard Trance music. My source is a Canadian website called xvi. They have a huge number of full CD length mixes from local and non-local DJ's. We originally found it when we lived in upstate NY and used it to keep up with the scene in our favorite Canadian city of Ottawa. You could see who was going to be DJing at what club and then download some of their stuff to see if you liked it before you went.

Highly recommend downloading some of this for pre-race music. For those of you that are skeptical you need to try it...will get you pumped.

Here is the site: http://xvi.com/Your.Nightlife.Network/

Click on "Media" and you can figure it out from there.

Michael

PS - I am downloading your mixes now and will let you know what I think. Looking at the old school one has me excited.

So far the only one I have listened to at length is the "Live from His Cave" since Trance is my favorite and I have to say it was pretty damn good. If it makes me want to speed while I drive to work then it has got to be good. I really like the transitions around 11 and 23 minutes.

Benton4 loaded it on her Nano and used it for running the other day. Think I have a trance convert now.

Michael

PS Did you get a chance to check out xvi.com?

Nah I hadn't checked out xvi.com yet, sorry. I'll go take a look. You might want to give livesets.com a look, it sounds like a similar setup to xvi(you have to register but there's no spam, etc.) and I get a ton of mixes off there. I'm glad you liked the mix. I usually consider the mixes good enough to post when they give me the lead foot too.

Hah, I never even thought of that. If you have a 2-button mouse you should be able to right-click and save the file. I'll have to ask a coworker that uses a Mac about saving if it's a one-button mouse. Maybe using the action button?

I'll pile on with some House music.  My friend Dave - aka DJ Tall Dave - is a DJ in Austin and has a couple of really cool sets that you can download for free (big mp3 files) on his myspace page.  I think he'd love the idea of a bunch of triathletes working out to his mixes.  Enjoy!

Wiki:

House music is uptempo music for dancing and has a comparatively narrow tempo range, generally falling between 118 beats per minute (bpm) and 135 bpm, with 127 bpm being about average since 1996.

Far and away the most important element of the house drumbeat is the (usually very strong, synthesized, and heavily equalized) kick drum pounding on every quarter note of the 4/4 bar, often having a "dropping" effect on the dancefloor. Commonly this is augmented by various kick fills and extended dropouts (aka breakdowns). Add to this basic kick pattern hihats on the eighth-note offbeats (though any number of sixteenth-note patterns are also very common) and a snare drum and/or clap on beats 2 and 4 of every bar, and you have the basic framework of the house drumbeat.

This pattern is derived from so-called "four-on-the-floor" dance drumbeats of the 1960s and especially the 1970s disco drummers. Due to the way house music was developed by DJs mixing records together, producers commonly layer sampled drum sounds to achieve a larger-than-life sound, filling out the audio spectrum and tailoring the mix for large club sound systems.

Techno and trance, the two primary dance music genres that developed alongside house music in the mid 1980s and early 1990s respectively, can share this basic beat infrastructure, but usually eschew house's live-music-influenced feel and black or Latin music influences in favor of more synthetic sound sources and approach.

++++++++

Don't bother with the links, they won't work because they reference wrong when you copy and paste out of wiki.  But you get the idea.

Before I wiki'ed, I just assumed house was always live mixing of "techno" and trance was more synth.  Looks like I was only somewhat right

hey, here's a dumb Q- what is the difference between house music and trance music?

I think most DJ music is loosely defined by its speed as well as stylistic elements. The style drumbeat in the background is a big defining element. As for speed, House is usually right around 120 bpm. Trance is a bit faster. That's about the extent of my limited knowledge of DJ music.

Tall Dave calls his style "Funky Deep House".  Whatever.  I like it so I listen.
