I have hooked up with a great group of non-BT-ers that swim in South Boston - its across from our apartment so there are few excuses for me.  I've mentioned this to a few BT-ers and thought I'd throw it out to everyone!

The group swims Monday and Wednesday nites, 6pm.  Sometimes they swim along Carson Beach behind the L Street Bath House but the few times I've seen them it's been inside Castle Island Causeway - known as Pleasure Bay.

The route we took tonight equated to 2000 yds across and back.  Click on my blog, I call the route "Sugar Bowl". We meet at the flag poles, plenty of free parking, if you'd like to join and need real directions send me a PM (but google mapping pleasure bay will get you there Cool).

MAV? sfred45?? Are you coming??

F-O-H is the master chef; unfortunatly it's kid nite so he'll be hanging with his son ~ we do have beer though!!!
and as you know there's a great irish pub one block away - it is Southie after all.... you can't throw a rock without hitting a bar!

Is that anywhere near B'way or Andrew Red Line?  And how's the water temp there?

#1 the water isn't Walden Pond that's for sure; it is the ocean - and very salty so you'll float better
#2 The Temp varies; it was warmer last week; a non wetsuit wearer bagged out last night.... Mina; you're MUCH tougher!
#3 If you bring your bike it's probably easiest from South Station.  Unfortunately it's about as far as you can get form the red line.

Can't take bikes on the T during rush hour, but I realize (duh!) it's only 4mi from my office, so biking's an option.  That and it looks like there's an easy bus (#11 for those city-dwellers who are considering it) to take from B'way T that stops right there, so either way - I'm in for tomorrow night if you'll be swimming!

Wait... why Sugar Bowl?  Shouldn't it be more like a Salt Shaker?

I should rename it because I got a couple of serious mouthfulls last night - eeek.  I think that's an old southie term i picked up years ago....

I must say that having planes coming in and out of Logan flying a few hundred feet over your stroke is pretty darn cool!

Cool! That must be when runways 4R & 4L are in use (i.e. wind blowing in from the north east).

Hello,
Can you give directions for where exactly we are meeting? Or PM me directions? I guess the "when you get to Castle Island" directions is what I am looking for. Thanks and see you tonight!

ok I think Im a little freaked out about swimming in southie water, the crap factory is right there and even though I run or bike the area daily I cant really see that being healthy, I usually swim at umass boston or do open waters on cape where you can see 25 yards infront of you or in any direction, anyone ever feel a little under the weather after?

crap factory? - thats the least of my worries!  I think the pool at my gym has been worse!
I've lived in and around southie (including Satin Hill) for the last 15 years and i'm the LAST person i thought would EVER swim here. Would i rather swim in fresh water? HELL YA but when its right outside my front door......

I feel fine and the group that i started swimming with has been 2-3x/week regulars for the last few years.

Take a chance  - toughen up that gut - and jump in! (just shower within 5minute s of getting out)

I feel fine today. Besides the film of ick, which I showered off, I think yesterday was great! I have been swimming slow by myself, I now see, time to step it up and HTFU! Yesterday was a good wake-up call! Thanks girls!!!!!!!

I definitely feel fine after the swim.  Visibility is low, but that doesn't bother me much.  Bacteria and such does though, and it looks like Pleasure Bay readings taken around the corner are super low.

I thought they were pretty darn good swimming conditions... and being in a flight path was actually pretty cool!  I had to do backstroke a couple times to watch the planes coming in.  Laughing  Floating and having that perspective is definitely a unique thing.  I thought it might be annoying or add to the ick factor or something, but it's far enough away that it was just a neat spectacle if you wanted to check it out.

Thanks for the invite, Lisa!  I'm totally jealous you have a beach so close.  I may have to join you for a swim there again soon.
