Anyone else going to be at Long Branch this weekend?

I'm excited, though this will be my first time swimming in the ocean (ok, I've been IN the ocean before, just never tried to swim freestyle in it!) so I'm a little nervous for that. But it seems so informal - a great place to try my first ocean OWS.

I have done Long Branch in tha past, but since they moved some races to Saturday, I have work conflict. I will be at Lavalette on Sunday for that sprint tri.

Long Branch is excellent. Get there early for a good rack in transition. Are you doing long or short?

Good to know! Thanks! I'm coming from Morris County, so I am going to have to be up early anyway

I'm doing long course - I trained for Mooseman HIM in early June, only to get a nasty case of strep throat 4 days before the race. I had a 101 fever for 3 days, and the doctor nixed any racing plans... My fitness took a bit of a dive because I wasn't able to do anything for almost 10 days - so this is my first foray into tri since then!

If you trained for HIM, the long course should not be a problem. If you get there early, you can park practically next to transition (sometimes next to your rack). There is a different start for long course swim, and the ride is two loops instead of one. For the run you will run north past the short turn-around to the end of 7 Presidents park. Some people expect that when they run north and return south to transition that they are done. WRONG. Still have to go further south to end of boardwalk before you turn around for long course. (Once again, the long run south turn around is past the short run turn around.) It's all marked, just FYI.

Use your watch, too. The races used to be unofficial but this year they got a timing system. In the swim event a few weeks ago there were still bugs, so you might want to keep your own time just in case!

Also going down from Morris County with 2 others.  We're doing the long course.  I am seriously undertrained on the bike, had a half mary in April and just haven't managed to get the time in the saddle with all the rain we've had.  Excuses, excuses. Oh well, it's flat.  I may be a serious contender for the last finisher.

No worries - I'll be right there with you! I am, by nature, a slow biker (coming from a running background, just picked up the bike in January). Add to that my unknown ability to swim in the ocean, and looking at last years results, I'll definitely be BOP

Yeah, I didn't look at last year's results before I signed up.  They are a fast group.  Oh well, this is meant to be a training race before my first OLY at NJ State.  I think we are going to be cold and wet for most of the race.

Weather turned out great, and that was a lot of fun.

But for my first ocean swim - that surf was something else! On the swim in, I got overtaken by a huge wave, tossed around 'in the washing machine' where at least 2 other people ran into me, and then I kind of was thrown by the wave into the buoy rope. Ouch. Swallowed a bunch of salt water in the process!

But if I survived that, I can survive anything

How did everyone else's day go?

great job - sounds a little like war at the shore last september where there were some nice size breakers to get out beyond.  sounds like you trooped it out!  ocean starts are extra adventurous.  i hope to hit a few of the ocean races including sandyhookers this year!

You're supposed to ride those waves, not let them overtake you.  I found that the best line in was to actually cross the buoy line on the way in after the last buoy, then cross it again right before the impact zone.  It was pretty significantly bowed.

Did anyone else get confused by the run up?  This was my first tri here, but I definitely didn't see the long wood fence, ran right to the base of the ramp, and had nowhere to go.  Apparently people were yelling at me to go around, but there was so much cheering that I really wasn't paying close attention.  Thanks Doug for not DQing me as I hopped that fence.  Apparently the 2nd guy did the same thing.

That surf was rough.  The weather was great, and overall it turned out to be a great race day.

Hi all!

My friend has signed up for the Long Branch tri on 9/13. This is going to be his first race. He is not sure whether to buy a wetsuit for the race. What do you guys think? Get the wetsuit?

Thank you!!

If it's wetsuit legal, which it usually is, wear a wetsuit!

Hi,
Just completed the August primer this past weekend in Long Branch. This was my first Tri so I didn't want too many things to worry about.  I also didn't want to be stuck with a wetsuit if I didn't really love it.  Swim was fine without a wetsuit, water temp was very comfortable.  I'm glad to not have bought one as the T1 transtition was difficult enough not having to deal with the wetsuit.

If money is not an issue go with the wetsuit if he intends to do more in the future.  I will probably pick one up this winter for a Spring Tri which should be colder.

Good luck to your friend, I'll be a spectator this time.

Get the wetsuit! Just did the tri at Asbury this weekend and even though water temp was low-mid 70's and ocean calm as could be, wetsuit was so worth it. FWIW I rented mine from wetsuitrental.com. They did a very good job with the fitting. IMO.
