Aircraft crashed into a building on the upper east side of Manhattan.  Looks like an accident.

Well, at least the building looks secure (not going to collapse).

Terrible.

CNN is reporting that it is a very small plane. The pictures on tv right now seem like its only affected a small part of a large residential building. Thankfully its daytime and people should be at work.

I hope there aren't any casualities from anyone in the building.

Fox just inteviewed an eye witness who said she saw a plane 'doing acrobatics' and thought how stange....then it crashed into a building.  The acrobatics might have been the engine stalling?

 News still breaking.....

NORAD is putting air patrol in the skies of major US cities as a precaution. I'm glad to see that emergency steps are in place and are being activated. Its good practice even if this is an accident (as they think it is). I'm feeling a little comforted.

NORAD launching fighter air combat patrols over several major US cities, just in case.

Sorry, Comet beat me to it.

My best friend lives in the lower east side. I called and asked how he was (he's home today). He asked why I was asking in such a strange tone! After explaining, he said "So that's why I've been hearing all those sirens. (long pause)" His former SO worked in the WTC but wasn't at work *that* day. Bit unsettling.

I'm here in Midtown Manhattan about 20 blocks away.  Looks like 2 dead now and minimal damage.  I'm a pilot who has flown this same route (Hudson River Corridor, below 1200'), I've seen other folks have engine trouble, but they dump in the river...kind of suprising.

As a survivor of 9/11 (WTC Tower 1 88 Floor Office), hearing this brings back some terrible memories.  And to think today's date is 10/11...and there are no conspiracies yet?

Thanks for the info! I could see that the river was close to the building, maybe he couldn't make it there? I don't know, its sad either way.

To add to the weirdness of this, the plane was owned by and piloted by Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle.  He was confirmed killed in the crash.

this just puts me in major anxiety attack mode. My brother survived 9/11, but many friends did not. I have heard/read no terrorist suspicions, GW and DC are not being moved, but still. Just when we relax a little, something comes to scare the bleep out of us. Glad to hear our NYC Bters are OK.

Sorry to be all warm/fuzzy with you but...

I hope you do something nice for yourself tonight.  Bubble bath? Dinner with friends? This has got to majorly suck for you.

Wow, you were on the 88th floor?!  What floor did the plane hit Tower 1?

I hadn't occured to me that it is 10/11.

Derek, I don't follow baseball (or any other sport), what is "weird" about the Yankee's pitcher being in that plane?

Nothing in particular.  Just found it odd that the pilot was a recognizable public figure.  The odds of that being the case seem to be fairly slim.
