Extreme Veteran 461 Minnesota | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Hi Team! I'm a brand new swimmer, just started this last months challenge. Last month I had a goal of 2 hours in the pool, and that included 2 swim lessons that were 30 mins each. This month I have a goal of 4 hours in the pool and I have one swim lesson left of 30 mins. It has been a challenge trying to swim so far for me, but I am showing improvement so at least I'm not discouraged yet. Getting into the pool for 4 hours this month is a pretty big deal for me since it is double what I did last month! Other things about me, I'm a single mom of two, in college for a degree in social work, work part-time at the food co-op, and in a relationship with a lovely lady. Both of us are training for triathlons, so it is nice to have each other to bounce things off of. We are also both training for a century ride in April. I'm also going to be training for a 1/2 mary and her a full mary. So we have a lot of stuff going on! I'm excited about this challenge! Jeni |

Elite 3471 Evergreen, CO | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Hi team!! We've got a great name to live up to :D This is my first challenge and am actually excited to start swimming, even tho I'm a poor swimmer, which I suppose is the whole point! I took most of Oct and all of Nov off from swimming so feeling recharged and ready. I live in CO, my kids are almost grown so my husband and I have more free time now, and we started doing tri's to get in shape. And like everyone else I am now addicted. Don't think hubby is addicted, but he's a good sport and keeps me company on rides. And he's good at guilting me into going to the pool at 5:30 am! So here's to a fun month!! Susan |

Veteran 228 Greenbelt, MD | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Yeah, I'm a penguin...now if only I can get to swimming like one! Hi folks...I'm Kelley. I'm a tri newbie. Just started training in September and just signed up for my first triathlon that doesn't take place until the end of August (trust me, I need the time). I'm doing it mostly to get in shape, improve my health, and lose lots of weight (not Discovery Channel special amounts of weight, but I think I could easily shed an Olsen twin and still be an Athena...could probably shed both and still weigh more than most women in Hollywood). This is my third challenge and they are what has really kept me going. Right now I'm running (well jogging, and actually mostly walking) and swimming. I love to swim so that's never a problem. I grew up with a pool and used to be a real fish. Now suddenly I can't swim without a nose plug, but otherwise I'm doing well (in fact today I totally smoked my previous swims by going 500 yards in one shot...my previous high was only 200 yards). My goal is something like 15000 yards if I remember properly. I swim 2-3 times a week for 45 minutes each (actual swimming time...about an hour or so in the pool though) which gets me about a swimmer's mile (1650 yards or 33 laps). I just started reading Total Immersion and I plan on doing TI drills in addition to my laps at least once a week during the challenge. As for about me...I'm 35 and hopelessly single. I'm a website developer and work in the defense industry. I also volunteer as an EMT (hence my username) and that's something I love, but I've had to really stop spending much time at the station with the start of all this training...it's hard to go put 3 or 4 hours in hauling sick/injured people twice my size up and down steps after a tiring workout. So I usually spend every other Friday overnight there and maybe one other night/afternoon a week. If I come up with any funny stories this month from that I'll be sure to share (trust me, one of the greatest reasons to be an EMT is the funny stories). That's about it. Nice to meet you guys and good luck. This is going to be a blast I'm sure! Kelley (who tends to ramble!) |

Expert 851 Oceanside, CA | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Hello from Southern California! I think the only penguins you'll find around here are at the San Diego Zoo I'm 48 and married to a triathlete - who's my number 1 motivator. This next year will be his 3rd year (I think) and he's planning on doing his first HIM and if the Marine Corps doesn't send him to Iraq, he'll be doing an IM in the fall. Watching his races, I got caught up in the fun everyone was having and decided that I wanted to participate instead of jockstrap This is my 3rd challenge and I'm really looking forward to it. Monday starts my official training for my first triathlon and I'm super excited. I love to swim! I swam competively 30 years ago and am just now getting back in the water - 3 weeks ago - and I keep wondering why I ever stopped! My goal is small, since I'll be following a training plan. I swim in an indoor saltwater pool at our fitness center and I'm usually swimming after running on the treadmill or strength training. When I'm not training to be a triathlete I'm a paralegal/office manager who daydreams about retiring and being a stay at home wife. I wish us all good luck and I look forward to getting to know some more great people. Edited to add: If noone else wants the job, I volunteer to be the head elf. Regular 80 Colorado Springs, Colorado | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Hi Pesky Penguins! My goal for the month is 15000 m. I swam in HS and 1 yr in college, then on and off after that. I started "training" for triathlon after my daughter was born in June 2006 and completed a sprint tri in September. If I get the childcare stuff worked out, I'm planning to do another sprint tri a week from tomorrow. I haven't been concentrating on swimming because it's the hardest for me to fit into my days, but after next weekend I want to be in the pool more until it warms up outside. I miss the GOOD feeling after a good swim, (as opposed to the OW feeling I get now). Personally, I'm more of a beat-the-clock, enjoy-the-training person than a competitor. When there's a sprint to the finish, I'm the one who gets touched out. And that's okay with me. But I like setting and meeting personal goals, and I like feeling strong and healthy. So-- here's to some pesky penguins embracing the cold and swimming through December! |

Veteran 187 Hertfordshire, England | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Hey there fellow penguins! I'm Dan, I'm only 16, and i'm from the UK. I did one sprint tri last year, and really enjoyed it. Having just bought a new bike I've decided that I'd really like to do some more tri's next year, including a couple of olympics, if I can find some without a lower age limit of 18 . My goal is 10,000m for December. I just really want to build a good base to build on next year. My other sport is basketball, which I play two or three times a week. On a personal level, I'm still in school and studying for my AS levels next june, then A levels a year after that. Other things I enjoy are hiking, and rock climbing, when I get the chance, as where I live is not very mountainous, and have to drive for 4/5 hours to get to some . lets go penguins!! |

Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Hey Penguins! I set my goal for 20k yards this month. I LOVE to swim, so much so that in fact I'd rather (and have been known to) swim instead of run or bike. I'm making myself run a lot this month, but also need to prep for a 100x100 yard swim in January. This was my first season doing triathlons and some long distance swims. I'm hooked! ~Just keep swimming!~ |

Great job! I won't be able to start until the middle of the week. I just don't have access to a pool until Wednesday due to my schedule. But then after this week, I an done with my internship and will be able to go to the pool whenever I want. Thus the reason why my goal is teeny tiny. I knew the first week would be bad for me and the last week, so really that only gives me two weeks this month to do my goal! |

My goal for the month is 10,000 meters! I don't have anyone to train with (can't get friends out of bed at 5:30 to get in the pool) so I signed up for the challenge to help push me a little bit! I plan to do a few Tri's this year. I will at least do the Olympic and the 1/2 IM here in Lubbock and try to squeeze in a some sprints in between. Little bit more about me... I am a former Division 1 college baseball player. I pitched at Texas Tech for 4 years, until 4 arm surgeries forced me to quit playing. I am now an assistant baseball coach at Lubbock Christian University and a Special Ed Teacher. I absolutely love what I do, but missed competition, which is why I satrted training for Tri's. Looking forward to getting to know you guys a little better, and hopefully help everyone reach their goals!! GO PENGUINS!!!!!!! |

Veteran 228 Greenbelt, MD | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Heya Penguins.... Had a good swim today. I've started reading Total Immersion and tried really hard to follow some of the ideas in there. I think I'm a pretty naturally balanced swimmer (I can float without kicking forever) so it's just a matter of trying to make myself have a little less resistance going through the water. Must have worked because I finished my swimmer's mile in about 1 1/2 minutes less time than previously...all the while doing higher reps. Felt pretty good. On a non swimming front I had an awesome run (well probably better termed a jog) yesterday (well for pitful running me). Managed to double my longest ever run from 4 minutes to 8 minutes (did I mention I'm a pitiful runner?). It was great to realize you get to a point where you're breathing hard but it doesn't really get any harder. As my legs get more and more attuned to running my running lengths should really go up. So, anyone else get into the pool this Sunday? Hope everyone had a great weekend! |

Just getting around to my post here...My goal for this month is 12,000 yards...I am a tri-newbie, but I am really really excited... I think this challenge will work out perfectly for me, since it looks like I may have messed up my hip...so the pool will keep me working out without the pounding that running would put on it. I'm off to a good start, swam 1350 on saturday and if the snow isn't to bad at the end of the day, I might get some more in tonite. |

Regular 171 Lubbock, TX | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Happy Monday all! Hope everyone's training is going well! I met with my swim coach this morning for the first time in awhile! He immediately (like during my warm up) noticed I was cross kicking. I've never had a problem with that before!! So I got in about 700 meters of kick drills with him this morning! ABSOLUTELY BRUTAL!!! After that I was spent and it was time to get ready for work. Not the start I was looking for this month, but it's ok, I have got to get that kick fixed! Hopefully it will lower my stroke count and I can be more efficient. Next swim is scheduled for Wednesday, but I might sneak in a little bit tomorrow! |

Expert 851 Oceanside, CA | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Hi all. Hope you had a great weekend! It's so nice to "meet" you all! So many tri-newbies! I don't think I've been in a challenge group with any of you, and that makes it even better, because the more training people I meet, the better I get. If there's one thing I've learned from being in a challenge, it's the ingrained desire to not let your team down, so you go a little harder than you might have on your own. I didn't get to swim this weekend; however, my triathlon training begins today with a swim. My numbers are low, since I'm in beginner base training and didn't want to overcommit myself. Just a couple of comments: Susan - our son is grown and out of the house and we're having a blast not having any 'child' obligations. We've gotten very good at spoiling ourselves for a change. Kelley - there's nothing wrong with jogging/running. We all start out that way. I was thrilled the first time I ran a solid minute without stopping! LOL Right now I'm back to walking and it's hard to not run. Congrats on getting started. Dan - congratulations on getting started meeting your goals! Randy - although I was born here, I was raised in Louisiana (geaux Tigers!) - I'm a closet Longhorns fan and cheer for them whenever possible. Next time you're going to be in town, give a shout out. My husband is a Marine and we're on Camp Pendleton and planning to stay here for awhile. It's an absolutely beautiful place and has the best weather for playing. As to being the head elf, I'm happy to do it. I'll pester a couple of the other head elfs (that I've challenged with in the past) to make sure I do what needs to be done properly. I'm not on the computer much on weekends, and mostly check in while I'm in downtime at work. My private messages go to my email address, so if you need to reach me for whatever reason, PM me. |
