Subject: Kyoto loopholes and the profit motiveI read a fairly in depth report the other day about the booming palm oil industry in Indonesia, specifically Borneo. Malaysia also has a huge palm oil industry.
It turns out that palm oil is used to make biodiesel which is sold to the Europeancountries who then get Kyoto credits for its use. The problem is that it takes more fossil fuels to make and transport the oil to Europe than it it saves. Also, it is driving the deforestation of the island of Borneo.
As they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I am disgusted with what is going on, but can you really blame Indonesia? They're just filling a need.
Anyway, gotta go, baby's waking up.
