Subject: What To Expect w/o Taper

Last year was my first year in Tris.  My "A" end of the year race was a HIM.  I completed the 20 week HIM BT plan including the taper period.  My time:  5:52:20

This year I am training for my "A" race which is a 140.6 race in November.  I am still planning on racing the same HIM race as I did last year, but I am using the race as a long brick within my IM Plan.  That said, I do intend to race the event and not just ride around.

With an extra year of training completed but no taper what kind of time should I expect?  I am trying to set my race expectations and really don't have a good idea of what to expect.

Also I may take a couple of days off after the race to recover....is that a good idea?

You may just surprise yourself. I have done 9 HIM and I set my PR this spring in a race I did 13 days after the Boston Marathon and the day after a hard 2 hour bike ride. I went into the race just to do a long workout and keep a streak alive (I've done this race each year it has been in existance). I was just going to go at a smooth tempo and take whatever me legs would give me. I never felt like I pushed the pace until the last 3 miles on the run when I realized I had something special going. I PRed by over 9 minutes. Just keep your eye on the big picture, don't make it a sufferfest, and try and keep yourself in IM mode.

An extra years worth of fitness will make alot of difference. However, I would reccommend taking the week after the race easy and recover so you can be ready for your IM. Good luck
