Total Time = 1h 33m 58s
Overall Rank = 93/917
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 29/131
Pre-race routine:

I walked from our accommodation down to registration at about 10.30am.
Had a banana and protein drink at about 11am and a power bar at about 11.30. (last thing to eat prior to race). Kept hydrating throughout the morning.
Event warmup:

Before having to put bike in transition had a slow ride and look around the run course.
Quick 10 min jog after race briefing (our wave didn't start till 38min after the first group)
Swim
  • 17m 20s
  • 1000 meters
  • 01m 44s / 100 meters
Comments:

Felt really comfortable once the swim got started. I didn't have a wetsuit so I got really cold waiting for our wave to start. Once I rounded the first bouy I got some clean water and relaxed into it. Navigation was fine and before I knew it I was rounding the last bouy for the exit ramp. The ramp was really slippery, I'd seen a few guys take a tumble in earlier waves so I was really careful on the exit.
What would you do differently?:

Wear a wetsuit. Not only does it improve swim times and bouancy it prevents you from freezing while waiting for your wave start.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Reasonably happy with T1. Located bike without any delay. Had a few seconds longer then I wanted trying to put my race number belt on - just cold shaking hands, otherwise pretty good.
What would you do differently?:

Just practice to get faster and slicker. Orientation through transition was really good.
Bike
  • 47m 49s

  • 37.64 km/hr
Comments:

Considering the conditions I thought I rode really well. About 4kms from home I felt my rear tyre going flat slowly...(I wasn't stopping this close to home)so I just rode on it trying to keep from loosing too may positions (kept pace up over 35km's on a flat tyre but still got swamped by a few guys). By the time I got back to T2 tyre was completely flat - Stuffed the tyre but hopefully my rim is OK. Still did an OK split taking this into consideration
What would you do differently?:

I thought all went to plan - EXCEPT THE FLAT TYRE.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Great T2 - felt comfortable off the bike - found my shoes really easy - and finally they went on as planned.
What would you do differently?:

best T2 ever
Run
  • 28m 49s
  • 8 kms
  • 03m 36s  min/km
Comments:

Started easyish because I new there were a few big hills. Got the 1st one out of the way no dramas so uped the pace to catch a few guys that had passed me during the end sections of the ride (when I had the flat). I felt reasonably comfortable, caught a few guys I knew on the first lap. After the second really big hill I stretched out and uped again and caught a few others.
What would you do differently?:

All went to plan
Post race
Warm down:

Right calf cramped when I stopped and I knew straight away I had re-injured it. Kept warm and had something to eat and drink. I strated to get tight in the legs so I went out for a 15min jog to warm down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No wetty in the swim probably left me 1 or so minutes slower and a flat rear tyre on the ride probably lost me over 2 mins. Otherwise I felt really happy with my performance.

Event comments:

Good race. I couldn't walk the next day because of my right calf. Feels a little better today. I pushed really hard and I am sure that I gave everything I had. I have the lingering pain to prove it. Just as well it is my last race for the season

Man you run fast!! I can't beleive your time considering you have now found out about your torn achilles tendon, that's amazing.

I hope your recovery goes well, take it easy (as hard as that can be sometimes when you've been pushing yourself so hard to build up your fitness), put your feet up and enjoy the off season and a well deserved rest.
