Subject: Appendicitis... IM 3 months away!
Hi,

I was doing really well at my Ironman training for my first IM in Florida...until this past Monday when I had to have surgery for a perforated appendix.  I get my staples out on Monday and the doctor sees a stationary bike in my near future... but I am worried about how this will affect my IM in November... any thoughts/?

I guess I should be thankful this didn't happen even closer to November!

thank you,
Kate

Kate,

Sorry to hear bout your appendicitis. Was the surgery done laprascopically? I think you'll be alright once you resume training. Try not to get too worked up about it now and give yourself some time to recover and then get back into training. See how your training goes before assessing whether or not the IM is possible.

Here's a brief story of my surgery experience during IM training. I hope it helps relieve some of your fears.

I didn't have appendicitis but ended up with a kidney stone that required surgery during my IM training last year for Lou. I was unable to work out at all for 3 weeks; and then gave myself a couple of weeks of easing back into training and was right back to full volume after that. My surgery was in early June and IM was the end of August. The medications the doctor had me on had lasting effects and I had issues with my stomach the rest of my training and on IM day but I strongly feel it was 100% related to the medicine and not the surgery or the layoff from workouts and a fast ramp up back to full training volume. I made it to race day and earned my IM title so I think it is definitely possible to come back from surgery 3 months out and still compete in IM.
