Ironman

Sunny
Total Time = 7h 21m 33s
Overall Rank = 579/800
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 14/19
Pre-race routine:

Had a great night's sleep after Chet's wonderfull pasta dinner. Woke up at 4am, had one cup of coffee and two pieces of Whole wheat toast with peanut butter. Left for the race at 5:15 and arrived at 6:45, took 2 thermalight pills, and drank 6oz water mixed with 2 scoops carbo pro. Positioned my bike and gear at the transition and went to the swim start. Stopped at the portapotty on the way!! Went back up the the bike transistion to check everything one more time and then back to the portapotty!!
Event warmup:

Did a brief swim warm up, and then positioned myself in the back of the pack for the start.
Swim
  • 46m 27s
  • 1931 meters
  • 02m 25s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim went as I predicted. I was positioned well, able to stay relaxed and breath. For the first 3/4 I was in a group and could feel the draft. When I rounded the far bouy on the return, I was somehow on my own, felt as if I slowed down. I seemed to be pretty much on course the whole way, maybe a little to far to the outside.
Transition 1
  • 06m 56s
Comments:

T1 seemed fine. I took a bit of a long shower to rinse off, could have cut that down a bit. Took two more thermolytes before the bike, got helmet, glasses, gloves, socks and shoes on and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

Take a shorter shower
Bike
  • 3h 52m 38s
  • 56 miles
  • 14.44 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike went pretty much as expected. I tried to go at an average, easy pace to save myself for the run. I was able to stay in the moment on the bike and focus just on that. Stopped to use the portapotty at mile 10 and the turnaround.
What would you do differently?:

For this race I performed as planned, but I need to get faster!!
Transition 2
  • 06m 29s
Comments:

Was a little confused in T2, having never done a separate transistion for the run before. Once I got my bag, I got my shoes off and on, had to put bluestuff on my left quad due to a strain. Also was supposed to stretch, but forgot. Used the portapotty after transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Put more sunscreen on
Run
  • 2h 29m 3s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

The run went better than expected. I stayed cool by putting ice in my hat and sports bra. I walked through all transitions and some on the golf course. Never pushed hard. Used the portapotty 3 times during run, two very necessary, one not.
What would you do differently?:

Need to figure out nutrition better. Had bad diarrhea mile 4-6. Too much carbopro??

congrats you had a great race. I wish I could run that well after the swim bike. I had the same potty problem in my first half. I attribute it too much goo and accelerade together. This year I cut back on both and didn't have the potty problem but I had energy problems on the run. Getting the right mix is gonna take me a while!!!!
