![]() Swim
Comments: I was in the first wave with the under 30 males and elites. There were only a handful of us. I was of course DFL in this group except for one guy who I tried to draft, but he was all over the lake. I ended up just passing him and drafting whenever someone from the next wave caught up, which was often. What would you do differently?: Swim faster, draft off somebody who can swim straight. Maybe register as a clydesdale so I'm in a group more to my ability. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Race organizers provided foot wash bins along the sidewalk leading up to T1. Had some trouble with wet socks, but an otherwise smooth transition. What would you do differently?: Practice the art of the pre-clipped in shoe mount. I'd rather run in socks than on speedplay cleats. ![]() Bike
Comments: Good, uneventful, bike segment. I changed gears for wind more than any hills. There were no hills. What would you do differently?: Maybe push a bit harder. Find a more secure fastening technique for my aero drink holder. (it clunked alot) ![]() Transition 2
Comments: My shoes were wet because I had hung my wetsuit on the rack above them. Not a biggie though. ![]() Run
Comments: Didn't get my land legs back until about mile 3. Literaly choked down my 3rd gel at mile 4.6. I was continuing my nutrition plan in prep for the 1/2 IM. I need practice eating on the Run. LSD Pace. I can't seem to get it slowed down and the HR down on the track, but in a race I seem to have no problems :) Good News: No Knee Problems, No Hydration/Nutrition Problems, No Back Problems. Bad: Slow, some stomach soreness from bike aero position for 1st 2mi. What would you do differently?: Run faster. I went too conservative because it was my first race of the year and I didn't know how my knee would do. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Mostly walking around and stretching. What limited your ability to perform faster: On the swim, despite 6months of TI drills my form continues to suffer. I have no endurance problems, but my speed needs to improve. On the bike, nothing held me back except my own hesitation to push it. I could have added 2MPH easily. Event comments: Very good beginner's race. The no chop swim, flat bike, and all purpose trail run are a perfect introduction to the sport. They offer a very nice sprint distance course with no suprizes. The sponsors were great with plenty of gels on course, and recovery drinks and freezer pops at the finish. My main concerns were equipment and nutrition. This was the new P2K's first race, and I had just finally gotten the cleats right the night before.
Day before - White lightning'd the cleats and chain, Adjusted derailleurs, washed water bottles, packed checklist, and drove to the race site. I picked up my packet and drove the bike course to familiarize myself. When I got to the hotel and settled in I took the bike out for a couple of laps around the neighborhood to shake out any final issues.
Night before meal - Ponderosa...before you say ewww, this actually made sense. Where else can you custom get a plain grilled chicken breast and pasta with no sauce? I was by myself, so the salad bar buffet suited me fine. I over did it on the dessert bar though :(
Race morning - Breakfast = bannana, raisin bran, OJ, toast. Drove to the site about 1 hr before the 1st wave. Setup my transition site, stood in line for body marking, got my chip, found out there were assigned transition areas, so I moved all my stuff.
We found out that morning that wet suits would be allowed, so I donned mine and checked out the water. No real warmup. Isn't that what the swim is for? :)
