HFP racing
91F / 33C
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 40m 13s
Overall Rank = 104/122
Age Group = Male 20-24
Age Group Rank = 7/7
Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 4AM drove to Morgantown. Had coffee and a powerbar in the car.
Event warmup:

Swam around a little bit...cut my toe on a rock...bled profusely for about 5 minutes, coagulated...then got ready to race.
Swim
  • 38m 47s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

Overall not a bad swim for me...I started out with a good breathing pattern that I had previously practiced with then quickly reverted to my old slower pattern. Still its a 2 minute improvement from my last swim. The hardest part was getting out of the water onto a floating platform...it actually took 2 attempts. Then there was a climb from the water to T1 that amounted to a cliff...that sucked too.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more OW swimming. As long as I don't get freaked out...I think I could get under 35
Transition 1
  • 00m 31s
Comments:

This time has to be wrong...but didn't go to badly.
Bike
  • 1h 46m 7s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 14.02 mile/hr
Comments:

Wasn't ready for this...plain and simple. Got crushed early and never recovered. Had to walk bike up some hills.
What would you do differently?:

Obviously train more....this course was a little too hard after less than 1 year of riding.
Transition 2
  • 02m 54s
Run
  • 1h 11m 53s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 11m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

Terrible run. In T2 someone said told me its a flat course. For the most part this is true...except that mile 4 was a pretty big hill...all of mile 4. This is if I remember correctly...I was kind of delerious from the heat at this point. Felt bad about how poorly I did on the bike but even worse about the run. It seemed every time I got a good pace going I would crash shortly after.
What would you do differently?:

I thought I had trained more for this run than the St. Anthony's, but I did significantly worse. Gotta keep training.
Post race
Event comments:

I thought it was a good race...just that I didn't run a good race. A bunch of factors could have attributed to my poor performance but I think I need to take lessons from this. I will just have to work harder the next time and keep at it.

Wow, anything in WV has to be hilly!  Too bad you had to walk, but that's great that you didn't give up!!  Bummer about the toe!

Well, I guess it has to get better after this!  Way to shave some time off your swim!!
