Pre-race routine:

Water, Coffee, Water, 2 oatmeal pancakes, water, drive the the race site. Bike check in was day before. When stuff is in two different locations, it's a cause for "forgotten detail" anxiety.
Event warmup:

Nothing special, some stretching, shivering, waiting in the port'a'potty line.
Swim
  • 39m 59s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

Weather conditions caused a mild fog on the lake and the course direction took the racers into the rising sun. for some it may not have been a problem but for me it was somewhat distracting. A bigger distraction was my leaky goggles.
What would you do differently?:

Replace goggles sooner, I knew they were on the verge of failing.
Transition 1
  • 03m 23s
Comments:

T1 seemed to go ok. Previous race was on grass and this was on paved parking lot, I didn't want to step on my wetsuit on the pavement. Laid my stuff out a lot better this time. Slammed down a bananna, forgot my fig bars!
What would you do differently?:

Transition with a little more sense of urgency.
Bike
  • 1h 18m 26s
  • 25.3 miles
  • 19.35 mile/hr
Comments:

Front deraileur let me down twice!

Race start was very cold!

Lots of riders, some bunched up. Overall it was a good ride, passing a severl riders and not being passed very often. Slowed down at one water station after dropping a bottle going all out at the previous station, also couldn't get one Cliff shot open.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Transition to the ride faster, head out a bit stronger especially on mostly flat race courses.
Transition 2
  • 02m 29s
What would you do differently?:

Again, transition with more urgency
Run
  • 55m 13s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

flat course, tried to pace myself with others so as not to lose time. By the last mile my mantra was "walking is not an option"
What would you do differently?:

set a pace an concentrate on maintaining it. Often my mind would wander and next thing I know I'm running slower.
Post race
Warm down:

drink, eat, walk around, pack up my stuff, eat some more.
Find other BT'rs

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Anxiety in the water. Not an outright fear just a feeling of uneasiness. The first 15 minutes on the bike all I can think of is how glad I am to be out of the water.

Event comments:

My second triathlon. Compared to the first, this was the big leagues. Over 1000 particitants, lots of race officials out on the course, lots of volunteers, very well organized, partily closed, well controlled bike course. One detail I'm not sure how I feel about was the upbeat music played over the transition area and finish line. It wasn't distracting, but I could have done without it.

I was less prepared for this event due to life getting in the way. So that took a bit of the fun out of it. Nevertheless, as soon as they start registering for next year, I'm getting the plastic out!
