View Member's Race Log
Staten Island, NY
United States
3rd Annual Patanella's Pancake Triathlon
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 26m 30s
Overall Rank = 266/478
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Woke at 4:00AM to prep family. Once there, set up transition area, planning route from water to T1.
Event warmup:

Stretched legs since they tend to cramp up. Felt pretty good with a bit of the butterflies.
Swim
  • 10m 43s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started at the back of the pack since I was not too confident but quickly regreted that due so many ultra-slow swimmers & zig-zaggers. Felt good thru out the swim (should have pushed a bit harder due to short distance).
What would you do differently?:

1) Start on outside until I pass the slower traffic & avoid so many zig-zaggers.
2) Count the bouys to better assess my effort level
Transition 1
  • 03m 47s
Comments:

Removed goggles & cap as I got on my feet. Paced myself during run to T1 200yds.
What would you do differently?:

1) Bring 2nd towel to dry feet better
2) Bring more water to wash feet better
3) Practice riding with bike shoes on pedals & put on while riding
4) Consider putting on socks after bike on short races like this to save time (will practice during brick work outs first)
Bike
  • 00m
  • 12 miles
  • 0.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Made sure the tires where pumped to 120psi as close as possible which made for a harder ride but better that way. Funny watching my amber front light fly up then smash in a bunch of pieces (safely away from path)
What would you do differently?:

1) Bike without socks on short races
2) At least unstrap shoes about 1/4 mile before entering T2
3) Preferably, have feet out of shoes before entering T2
4) Secure or remove any clip-on reflectors/lights
Transition 2
  • 02m 42s
Comments:

Forgot to take helmet off, had to return (luckly), before running over chip pad.
Run
  • 32m 28s
  • 3 miles
  • 10m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Nice little run but my lack of practice made it seem like it was going forever. About halfway thru the race, I kept looking for the return sign but it came much later than desired.
What would you do differently?:

1) Stretch more frequently every night to help lossen the muscles a bit more overall
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

PRACTICE MORE & LOSE MORE WEIGHT!
Overall it was a decent race. There are obvious areas that I still have not fixed. Hopefully the doctor will give me some decent news for my knees this coming Thurs (like with my ankle).
I have a pretty good idea of where I want to be for next year. We'll see.

Event comments:

The race is as it's name implies "Flat as a Pancake". Nicely set up. Glad they closed off the streets for us (Staten Island can get pretty busy and crowded). Not much to say here but if you live in the area and want something to do in the AM, this is a nice event to attend.

Sounds like a good time.

You should have left your helmet on and finished the race that way.  Much more impressive to the spectaters.
