Overall Rank = 20/155

Age Group Rank = 1/15
Pre-race routine:

Woke at 5 am after only 6 hours sleep. Ate my pre-race oatmeal, started hytrating and took a couple Voltarin to reduce inflamation in my hip. I think my mystery injury is bursitis.
Event warmup:

did some stretching but mostly just walked around and talked with people and I also put myself in charge of Clydesdale weigh in. There was one guy who got on the scale and it didn't even bounce. He was well under 200 so I told him "Sorry you don't qualify" He threw up his arms and said "I weighed over 200 yesterday!" There was a Clyde who weighed in at 202 and he said he weighed 198 two days before and so he stopped working out and ate a lot.

Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

You really coulden't get up to speed because after about 40 yards there was a hard right turn out of the parking lot and onto the street.
Bike
  • 00m
  • 10 miles
  • 0.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Another thing that really bothered me about this bike is since I was near the front of the pack there wasn't many people ahead to sight off and all the road guards had not gotten down the idea that they needed to be very obvious and animated about letting the cyclists know which direction to go. Almost every time I came up to an intersection I had to yell out and/or gesture "Which way!" It was a real drag.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

The final bike insult, The road guards at the entrence back into transition were just kind of standing around near the two possible entrances to transition and didn't indicate which entrance to go into. Since I had come out one and since a couple runners were comming out where I had departed on the bike I went for the second, unused entrance. I was then told I had to turn around and use the other entrance.
Run
  • 00m
  • 3.1 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

I was running well until the last mile or so then my hip started hurting and I had to slow it up a bit.
Post race
Warm down:

Just put up my gear and stretched for a while. Started rehydrating, took some carbs and hit the showers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The bike course and my hip.

Event comments:

I know I bitched about the bike course and the helpfulness of the volunteers but I still have to give this race a qualified thumbs up. If you have not raced in Texas you just have to understand one thing; in general Texans are very friendly and very enthusiastic people. Even if the bike course folks were not terribly helpful they were highly supportive and enthusiastic.

Oh, and I set the course Clydesdale record!

No splits were provided and I kept punching the damn lane lines so I immediatly lost my ability to time my own splits.

Wind: Strong with gusts
Course: The course was not conducive to a good race. It was too short, there was too much time in residential area making multiple 90 degree turns over bumpy conditions and water was flowing or it was wet at every intersection. There was a big head-wind on the first straight stretch of road you came to and then we had some tail wind then cross winds.

Good race and great job setting the record!  I hope you're hip starts to feel better too.  Are you doing the (Fat Boy) Atomic Duathlon next weekend?
