Sunny
Total Time = 2h 59m 45s
Overall Rank = 165/281
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Ate 3 scoops Perpetuem in water and 1/2 a Clif Bar 2.5-3 hours before race.
Event warmup:

Didn't warm up at all. Just stretching. No bike warmup allowed. Running shoes were left at T2 at Penn STate campus. Between swim cap pick up, body marking, waiting in line to pee, etc. I didn't get in the water until swim time.
Swim
  • 34m 5s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 16s / 100 meters
Comments:

Nerves were a huge issue at the swim start. I was so nervous. The first 200 meters were really bad. Mentally I was out of the race before I started. Finally, settled into a rhythm.
What would you do differently?:

Swim the course before. Do more open water practice. Go out strong. Try to get control of my nerves.
Transition 1
  • 02m 40s
Comments:

Little disoriented after the swim. This transition took too long. But part of my strategy was to make sure I had my bearings before getting on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder from swim to transition area. Run harder with the bike.
Bike
  • 1h 21m 44s
  • 25 miles
  • 18.35 mile/hr
Comments:

I was worried about the hills on the course. I thought it would be pretty tough. It wasn't as bad as I thought. So I attacked several of the hills later in the race and felt good about it. Unfortunately, many of the downhills bottomed at in an intersection where it wasn't possible to get all your momentum's worth out of the downhill into the next up hill. Felt good about bike handling.
What would you do differently?:

Go out a little stronger if I knew I was going to be okay on the hills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Better T2 time than Cape May. Felt fast.
What would you do differently?:

Would have had Yanks for my new shoes. As it was I had to tie my laces.
Run
  • 1h 00m 17s
  • 11.8 kms
  • 05m 07s  min/km
Comments:

Felt strong. Perhaps went out a little bit too fast. Rather than getting faster by 10-15 sec. per mile I got a little slower by that amount.
What would you do differently?:

Start a little slower and build. I also wish I had driven the course or even run the course before
Post race
Warm down:

Unfortunately not much. I had to run to a golf outing that afternoon

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Unfamiliarity with the course. Mental block on the swim.
