I did this race last year and will be doing it again this year.  Awesome swim in silver lake.  Did most of my OWS in this lake last year.  About 400 participants...sold out last year fairly soon.  It is a great beginners tri!! Fairly flat bike course and the run is mostly out and back on the airport landing strip.

So not to hijack the thread, but I have a question of my own - this will be my first triathlon EVER, and I am wondering how the transition zones work.  Are they private?  (e.g. can I strip off my suit and change into bike clothes??).  This is probably a dumb question, but I am wondering nonetheless.  Thanks!!

Never a dumb question.  Transition is a wide open area where you and all the other 400 people will rack their bikes.  No privacy whatsoever.  When you come into transition after the swim....you basically strip your wetsuit off and what you are wearing underneath is what you will be wearing on the bike.  Basically you will want to wear a tri top and comfortable tri/biking shorts.  When you come into transition take your wetsuit off, put helmet, shoes and socks on and your good to go.  You have chosen a great race to start off with.  Good luck and I will more than likely see you there.  I will be wearing the donkey gear!

Amy Jo - Question for you about the wetsuit. I did the Tri-ing for Children race and did wear my wetsuit but was one of a few in my wave. For the Silver Lake race, I was wondring if I should wear it or not. Swimming is not my strong event (actually they are all pretty poor!) so I think I would prefer to wear it. I was thinking the water would be pretty warm, being late August and I have a two piece long sleeve De Soto suit- what's your opinion?

Thanks for the help!!

The water is pretty a comfortable temp, but it is deep water.  I am all about the wetsuit.  If your not a strong swimmer like me, it will give you a sense of security and you should definitely wear it.  I have not done a tri yet without mine.  There are certain races that won't let you wear them because of the water temp but I have not done one yet that hasn't let me. Hope this helps and looking forward to meeting all you in Portage!

Jason -

I don't live in Milwaukee, but I will be there on the 21st at the airport and can take it back to Madison with me. I'll be doing the Silver Lake Tri and can put it on my bike rack along with my bike and take it to Portage on the 23rd. If it works for you, I'd be willing to help you out. I'd need you to meet me at the airport (Mitchell) or someplace nearby around 3:00. Let me know if that will work.

Tracy

I have to be at the amtrak station at 3, for my 3:45 departure...

is there any possible way I can convince you to get here an hour earlier? I'll throw in lunch :P

I have to pick up my kids and maybe a family member or two at the airport - they land at 2:05, so I can meet you before I meet them. Also, we are going to a Brewer's Game in Milwaukee on the night of the 23rd. I could even bring your bike back if you need me to - I didn't think about that before. You can email me privately if you'd like - [email protected].

I will do my "don't rain dance" for you.  At least it wouldn't be as hot as hell as last weekend

My race report is finally up...took almost as long as the race :P

I had a blast, beat the swim goal I had by 4:30, the bike goal I had by 7:13 and finished the run portion.

Was great meeting amy jo, tracy rocks for brining my bike to and from milwaukee (i can never thank her enough) and when SSMinnow yelled her screen name at me on the run portion, it took me about 5 minutes to figure out what she was talking about...then I realized it was her BT name

pics are here

i would post mine, but....ugh

I enjoyed the race (until I really sucked at the run) and I enjoyed meeting some fellow BTers as well. Actually, before the race there was a woman swimming a bit in the lake with a similar outfit to what SSminnow said she would be wearing. She wasn't really that short, but I asked her if she was from the BT threads and she just gave me an odd look.....

Oh well, I did get to see the real SSminnow after the race! And it was nice to see Amy Jo with her top on and also cheer on Jason throughout the course.

I look forward to meeting more of you at future events. This was my final Tri for the season, so maybe next year. Thanks for everyone's help with all my newbie questions!

I will look out for the Donkeys as I volunteer at the upcoming IMMOO.
