I found this at findaraceevent.com and decided to sign up after e-mailing the RD, a firefighter named Michael Daly. He assured me that there will be lifeguards for the swim and that the bike course is closed to traffic.

It seems like it will be fun, but I am a little worried about getting mowed down by uber-fit firefighters! I only have one sprint, one oly, and one du under my belt (this is my first season). Is anyone else in? I really like that the proceeds benefit the Achilles Freedom Team.

This does look like a good race. I may do it.

I am also going to sign up for the Tunnel to Towers run the following weekend.

I'll start by saying I had a good time, and had a few good chats with the people at the race. But the race itself was a total disaster.

Totally and utterly unorganized.

No signs, no traffic control (fun when you got to City Island, eh?) and no race marshals. When I got back from the bike, I almost ran over the photographer who was taking pictures of a posing spectator standing in the transition area. I actually found myself completely alone on the run at one point.

I've gone to the website several times and there's nothing posted about the race... results, pictures, etc.

Feedback anyone?

Nobody well disagree with you about how this race was run.  It was their first year running the race, hopefully all the kinks were worked out and next year will be better.

Even for a first year race, it was a mess. At the very LEAST, they should have had signs up to direct us the right way on the course. I'm sure next year will be better...

Yes a beautiful day and setting ruined by lack of preparation and organization. I'll chalk a lot of it up to being the first race and all but come on. I would be embarrassed if I were the race director. The course being unmarked is inexcusable, and the pre race announcement was crap. How about telling everyone the bike course was open to traffic and to stay to the right and to observe traffic signals as there will be no one stopping traffic ? The fact that no one was injured is amazing! I know with a little preparation you could have gotten 50 to 100 volunteers to direct the athletes in the right direction. And results .....do you think they will ever get posted?

I've emailed the address on the website. Though the results really don't mean too much now do they? I passed a guy on the bike (I can describe the bike, but I won't!) and then got to the turn-around where the ambulance was. On the way back, I passed him again!

Anyway, at the very least, I wouldn't mind seeing some pictures. I know there was a photographer because I almost ran her over when she was standing in the middle of the pathway into the transition area.

Sweet.

I live about 15 minutes from this location and never even heard about the race.  I probably would have done it but am glad I did not based on this thread!  Hope they get it together for next year as I may consider doing it just as it is so close to home.

Maybe you should speak with the organizers and help out for next year.  Be part of the solution don't add to the problem.  Since you obviously know the pitfalls of what happened in this race maybe you can consult with them on how to make it better.

Possibly the person taking the pictures remembers you as having almost run them over and deleted your pictures.

While the race was disorganized and I agree with you on that, you sound a bit bitter.  It was a beginners race and was run for the first time this year.   Think about how the disorganization affected your time, if you even know that.   How the proper organization can help the athletes do better.

I know a forum is to speak your mind, however it can also be used to better a race, not about what they didn't do right.

I absolutely agree about helping out. I've volunteered for races before and I'll do it again. I'd be glad to help out anytime.

The disorganization definitely had an impact on my (and everyone's) time, but I enjoyed myself nonetheless.

But you can't excuse poor planning just because it's a first race. Literally 5 or so signs on the course would have made it a different race. Not bitter, just honest. Laughing

Nice to know you are not bitter.  Honesty is always good.   I don't want to make excuses for anyone whether it be there first time or not, just that for those of us who know how a race should be run volunteering within these organizations to make the races better is something we should think about.

Were there any pictures of you at the tri?

No pics... there were only swim pictures and a couple of run pictures. Nothing from the bike. Kinda weird...

Yeah I looked at the pics on their website and interestingly enough, they only had swim pictures.  And obviously not of everyone that participated.  Well at least I hope your time was something that you could be proud of even though the lack of organization affected everyones time.
