Regular ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hiya, Got room for someone on the other side of the pond ?? ![]() Name: Adrian Story: I am 44 and live in the Cairngorm National Park in Scotland , I work as an IT engineer and work shifts which sometimes mess's up any training plans but take the 'Captain Jack Sparrow' approach to schedules... (thems more guidelines than actual rules....). I have never been a competitive athlete in any way ! However we spent a holiday in Victoria in July 2007 (fab place, you'll love it ). Noticed that I was starting to put on weight and decided to start running. Got my first pair of 'proper' running shoes at Peninsula Runners in Vic and that was that. Started running august 07, first 10k sept 07, first half mar nov07 and first marathon april08. Then got sucked into tri's , done 4 sprints so far -(2 events which I have done twice). Family Status: Married 22 years, 3 kids (20,17 and 14 ) Current Training: Since christmas I've been training for my second marathon which is a week away ! Then I will concentrate on my swim/bike as I am poor at all 3 disiplines lol. Hoping for a sub4 marathon next week (if not then I'll have to do another one sometime !) 2009 races: I had big plans for last year but my Dad was ill and passed away in Jan09 which changed a lot of things. I did an offroad sprint in march, a road sprint in sept and then I did a team duathlon in Sept to raise money for the local Hospice that looked after my Dad. The duathlon was 140k around loch ness and we raised over 1600 pounds for the Hospice. Then in Oct I did a short but 'hilly' duathlon on Cairngorm mountain, that was hard ! Weightloss: Luckily weight has never really been a problem, heaviest I've ever been was 165lbs when we were in Vic. Currently at 150. 2010 races: did the offroad sprint again last month, got a marathon next week, Then the big race for this year is a 70.3 in september. maybe some other smaller races along the way to keep sharp (sharp being a relative term .... ) Reason I choose to apply for this group was I saw you are also doing a 70.3, ( plus we fell in love with vancouver island ![]() And with you being a swimmer I hope to pick up some advice as I still drown in a forward motion.... I am Lynne, 38, married (no kids) and from Glasgow, Scotland. I've been living in the Seattle area since 1998. I did my 1st triathlon in 2007 and since then I've competed in more than 20 of them. Dabbled in some biking events, 5K's, half marathons and some swim events. My big event this year is a HIM in September. I want to just finish without dying. So I'm a little worried about that. Also in September I'll be doing a 1.5 mile ocean swim in La Jolla, california. No wetsuits allowed. I am super excited to travel for this one!!!!!!!!! I have also been to Victoria BC and Vancouver is my fqvourite city by far! Did the 1/2 marathon there last year. Wont be there this year though |

I just finished my first oly distance last friday - 3h12min (1,5km - 27min, t1 4min, 43km - 1h26min, t2 4min, 10km 1h12min). Not the greatest time in the world, but my best (and first) anyway. Now it is sunday, and I went to the gym to do tt gauntlet day 8 (second week) and it was like drinking tar - not really nice. So, my friends, any suggestions for some total rest period, easy exersise regime or back on the saddle kind of approach?Same with the nutrition. I was gonna fast (eat-stop-eat) today, but I really don't feel like that right now... |

That would probably mess me up a bit! I think the amount of rest you need is a little bit of an experiment. Some people can just chug on through and some need more rest than others. I generally go 15-20 days before I physically and mentally need a rest day--in general my rest days need to not have any "tri training". Some people find that an easy swim or easy spin is good for a rest day. I think it just really depends...but in general I find that people who have started tri training recently need to take a rest day without any training. If you are finding by day 8 that you really are starting to have difficulty training, it might be better to schedule a rest day once a week (maybe a day that is usually filled with other commitments). When you get in the groove of training and don't feel drained then you can possibly start to stretch out your training to rest day ratio. But again, its fairly individual. As far as nutrition..I think the same thing goes...I know if I force myself to stay to a strict regime all the time I just go nuts and end up breaking. Give yourself some freedom for indulging sometimes. If you just really don't feel like it, then don't do it. You should for the majority of the time enjoy the process that is triathlon...rather than forcing yourself all the time. I'm all about bucking up sometimes and forcing myself to train or eat healthy on days that I'd just rather not, but sometimes you have to give yourself some slack. You can't do everything all the time, and one slip or extra rest day isn't the end of the world. I've had some of my best races the week after less than optimal training due to other commitments. Bit of a scottish connection on this thread ;-) 10 mile run at race pace yesterday and I got sunburnt :-( (in april ....) now well into my taper for next sunday, I am aiming for a sub-4 but its a big ask.... but if you dont try ! Just got an email to say my new bike shoes should be here this week, just good timing for starting my tri training next week. Should be interesting as I am cr@p on a bike and these will be my first ever clipless pedals (aka falling over pedals LOL ) Checked my training log and I have now ran as far this year as I did ALL YEAR in 2009 ! Meldy, your celtic supporting folks will be a bit unhappy just now. To finish of a poor season Celtic got beaten in a cup semi-final on saturday by our local team (they play in a division lower than celtic ) take care and train well :-) Adrian |

So it looks like I'll be getting fitted for new shoes soon. I got 2 massive blood blisters from my run yesterday. They are actually pulsating. Ouch! |
